The famously car-free and boldly scenic island in the Argosaronic Gulf has established itself as a vibrant center for the arts, attracting a wealth of artists and intellectuals over the decades. Its art scene, both historical and contemporary, is characterized by a unique synthesis of simplicity and profound creativity, fostered by its tranquil environment and stunning natural light.

10

It was chiefly since the mid-20th century that Hydra emerged as a haven for international artists. It began attracting more painters, poets and musicians, such as Leonard Cohen. Settling there and creating a band of artists, Cohen was in love with the island’s serene lifestyle and its community of creative minds. It was during this time that Hydra, which played a key role in the Greek War of Independence, gained a global reputation as a cultural centre.

Today the Argosaronic island’s contemporary art scene is alive and kicking thanks to a handful galleries and exhibition spaces preserving its artistic legacy while promoting contemporary art. The DESTE Foundation Project Space, housed in a former slaughterhouse, showcases major contemporary artworks, reflecting the island’s ongoing dialog with modern art trends. Similarly, Hydra School Projects has transformed the old Hydra High School and random spots around the main town into venues for innovative art appreciation, involving both local and international artists. Find out all about about the most unmissable classic and new initiatives for art lovers on the island here.

Detail of Apollo
DESTE Foundation Slaughterhouse Project

The DESTE Foundation’s Project Space has repurposed a former island slaughterhouse into a canvas for the avant-garde. Since its rebirth in 2009, this venue has served as a sanctuary for the audacious and the provocative in contemporary art. It’s where technological dreams and nightmares take shape under the curatorial watch of art world titans like Daniel Birnbaum and Massimiliano Gioni, featuring luminaries such as Jeff Koons. Each installation here challenges the senses, making it a must-visit for those who crave art that pushes boundaries. This year between June 18th and October 31st, art lovers will be able to see the exhibition ‘The Mad and the Lonely’ by George Condo, which will take place at DESTE’s Project Space.

Hydra School Projects
Hydra School Projects

Every June, Hydra School Projects becomes a focal point of the island’s cultural scene under the careful curation of Dimitrios Antonitsis. Known for his dedication as both curator and artist, Antonitsis orchestrates an ensemble exhibition that weaves together the talents of emerging creators with the seasoned prowess of internationally acclaimed artists. For over two decades, this seminal event has played host to more than 300 distinguished artists. Initially held in the Old High School, the exhibition has dynamically occupied various venues across Hydra—from local shops and hotels to the town square. Recently, the summer months have seen the Merchant Marine Academy transformed into an exhibition space, continuing this vibrant tradition of art and community engagement that pulses through Hydra each year. This year’s program has not been announced at the time of writing.

Wilhelmina’s Art Gallery
Wilhelmina’s Art Gallery

Located in the historic Captain’s Mansion at Mandraki Beach, Wilhelmina’s Art Gallery, which operates from June through October, curates a series of culturally colorful and thought-provoking exhibitions. Artists from around the globe converge at the newly opened gallery, their works exploring themes from mythology to modern-day philosophy and dreams, all framed by the unmatched backdrop of Hydra’s natural splendor. In summer of 2024, visitors can look forward to two exhibitions. The first, is the group exhibition ‘Magic Mirror’, held in Wilhelmina’s Gallery and Hydrogoios, at Hydra’s Keresbino mansion, will run from 17 June – 21 July. This will be followed by an exhibition by emerging French artists Ugo Li and Lucie Picandet, from 3 August until 7 September.

On the port’s west side stands a monument to Hydra’s nautical and cultural heritage: the Lazaros Kountouriotis Mansion. Once the home of a prominent Hydra family, now it displays an educating, stimulating and stirring array of Greek art. Permanent exhibitions include paintings by Periklis and Constantinos Byzantios, works by Vangelis Kyris and Anatoli Georgiev and works by Panagiotis Tetsis. Other exhibitions evolve with the seasons, each offering a fresh lens on the island’s rich artistic traditions.

In the heart of Hydra lies the Tetsis House & Atelier, the former residence and creative sanctuary of the renowned Greek painter Panagiotis Tetsis. Preserved just as he left it, the house offers an intimate peek into the artist’s daily life and creative process. Visitors can explore Tetsis’ vivid seascapes and Hydriot portraits, bursting with color, textures and angles definitive of his work. The space also occasionally hosts exhibitions by artists who draw inspiration from or are linked to Tetsis’ enduring legacy.
