ATHENS: AM EXTENDED

Date: May 5, 2026
Location: metacosmoi

This multimedia exhibition examines Athens after dark through 88 black-and-white photographs by Thanasis Karatzas, taken between 2008 and 2022, with a wider visual environment created by multimedia director Byron Nikolopoulos. The project uses augmented reality, virtual reality and video projections to expand the original street photographs into an immersive installation. Hosted at metacosmoi, near Omonia, it is one of the strongest visual-art entries in this year’s programme and a useful cultural starting point for the month ahead.

02

Cheimerinoi Kolymvites

Date: May 5, 2026
Location: National Archaeological Museum

Cheimerinoi Kolymvites, the long-running Greek band whose name translates as The Winter Swimmers, perform in the courtyard of the National Archaeological Museum. Their songs have occupied a particular place in Greek music since the late 1970s, with lyrics that move through love, solitude, company and everyday life. The setting gives the concert added interest: one of the country’s most important museums opens its outdoor space for a free evening of Greek song with a loyal intergenerational audience.

03

Fitness Sessions

Date: May 5, 2026
Location: Eleftherias Park

Eleftherias Park hosts one of the festival’s wellness events, placing movement and exercise in a public green space close to the city centre. The fitness session is part of a recurring series during May and gives the program a daytime, open-air option for visitors and residents who want something practical and social. It also widens the festival’s scope, since the month is built around much more than concerts and performances. Sports, wellness and public parks are part of this year’s civic calendar too.

04

Athens: Urban Frictions

Date: May 6, 2026
Location: Macart’s Cultural Space

Macart’s Cultural Space, in collaboration with iFocus Gallery, presents a collective photography exhibition dedicated to Athens and its urban surface. Urban Frictions brings together 30 Greek and international photographers looking at the city through streets, architecture, movement, public life and daily contact. The Lenorman location also gives the article useful geographical range, away from the familiar museum-and-gallery centre. For readers interested in contemporary photography and the visual language of Athens today, this is one of the clearest exhibition choices.

05

Music & Film

Date: May 14, 2026
Location: Megaro Arsakeiou

Silent cinema enters one of central Athens’ most impressive interiors with a Music & Film screening of F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, the 1927 landmark often placed among the greatest films in cinema history. The story follows a farmer, his wife and the woman who draws him into a violent plan, before the film moves into guilt, reconciliation and the pull of the modern city. Pianist Manos Kitsikopoulos performs live, creating an improvised score for the screening inside the Arsakeio Mansion’s courtyard, beneath its glass roof.

06

Queer Movie Nights 2026

Date: May 6 to 10, 2026
Location: Trianon Cinema

Trianon Cinema hosts Queer Movie Nights, a curated film program dedicated to LGBTQI+ cinema through features, shorts and documentaries. The series gives the festival a strong cinematic strand and brings audiences into one of Athens’ historic neighborhood cinemas. Screenings run across several evenings, with ticketed admission, and the program offers an important counterpoint to the month’s outdoor concerts and parties. For local expats and international visitors, it is also a direct entry into the city’s contemporary queer cultural scene.

07

Lusophone Festival

Date: May 6, 2026
Location: Kypseli Municipal Market

Kypseli Municipal Market hosts the Lusophone Festival on the occasion of World Portuguese Language Day. The Lusophone event brings Portuguese-speaking cultures into the festival through music, dance, food and community participation. Kypseli is one of Athens’ most interesting neighbourhoods for anyone trying to understand the city beyond the old centre, and the municipal market has become an active venue for public culture. This is a strong international entry in the programme, with language, gastronomy and live performance gathered in one civic space.

08

World of Beer Festival 2026

Date: May 8 to 10, 2026
Location: Technopolis City of Athens

Technopolis hosts the World of Beer Festival for a three-day event dedicated to beer, food and music. The former gasworks in Gazi gives the gathering a large industrial setting, with enough space for tastings, stands, live entertainment and evening crowds. The event is ticketed and has a broader food-and-drink appeal than many of the festival’s smaller cultural entries. For readers looking for an easy social evening in Athens, this is one of the most accessible weekend choices.

09

Date: May 9, 2026
Location: Klafthmonos Square

Klafthmonos Square hosts Athina Latina, a one-day Latin American and Caribbean festival with music, food and public celebration in the centre of Athens. The event adds another international dimension to the programme and brings dance, rhythm and gastronomy into one of the city’s central squares. It is also a good example of how the festival uses public space for community-led cultural events. For visitors, it offers a relaxed way to see contemporary Athens as a city of many languages, cuisines and musical traditions.

The Heroes concert moves across several Bowie periods, from Ziggy Stardust and the glam years to the Berlin recordings and the 1980s. It is a strong open-air pick for listeners who know the catalogue well, and an easy entry point for anyone drawn to the voice, theatricality and constant reinvention that made Bowie one of modern music’s defining figures.

Location: Plato’s Academy Park

Vassilis Skoulas, one of the best-known figures in Cretan music, brings the sound of the island to Plato’s Academy Park for a live feast built around voice, lyra, laouto and dance. The Cretan concert gathers musicians around a tradition that remains active, social and strongly tied to public celebration. In the setting of one of Athens’ most historic open spaces, the event offers a direct encounter with Cretan music as it is meant to function: performed live, shared by a crowd and carried by rhythm.

12

EDEN Block Party w/ Daphni (aka Caribou)

Date: May 14, 2026
Location: Avissynias Square

Dan Snaith, the Canadian musician and composer known internationally as Caribou and Daphni, comes to Avissynias Square for one of the festival’s strongest electronic-music events. Monastiraki square, closely linked with the city’s antiques market, gives the EDEN block party a setting with history, foot traffic and immediate access to the old commercial centre. Snaith’s work has moved across electronic music, pop structure and club rhythm for more than 20 years, making this a major free event for dance-music fans.

13

Yucatan pres. Sensory

Date: May 9, 2026
Location: Zappeion Megaron

Yucatan brings its open-air party format to the Zappeion, one of Athens’ most recognizable civic landmarks. The event takes place in the Zappeion grounds and adds a contemporary electronic-music entry to the festival’s second weekend. Its appeal lies in the combination of central location, DJ culture and an outdoor setting within easy reach of Syntagma, the National Garden and the wider historic centre. For readers looking for a polished night event without leaving central Athens, this is a strong choice.

14

Athens All Star Party 2026

Date: May 10, 2026
Location: Lycabettus Theatre Parking Lot

The Athens All Star Party returns to the Lycabettus Theatre Parking Lot, one of the festival’s most recognisable open-air locations. Set high above the city, the event gathers DJs, music collectives and a large crowd for an afternoon and evening party with a full view over Athens. It repeats one of the most successful formats of recent editions and remains a signature festival event: public, social, music-led and tied to a location that gives the experience its scale.

15

Midnight Express: ’80s Night Out

Date: May 11, 18 and 25, 2026
Location: Plato’s Academy

Film critic Akis Kapranos brings Midnight Express outdoors for three free screenings at Plato’s Academy, reviving the spirit of late-night cinema in an open-air festival setting. The Midnight Express program is devoted to three 1980s films: Sydney Pollack’s Out of Africa on May 11, Jim Henson’s Labyrinth on May 18 and John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China on May 25. The series gives the festival a relaxed cinema strand for several Monday nights, with nostalgia, genre pleasure and big-screen viewing outside the usual theater setting.

16

Traditional Island Festival

Date: May 8, 2026
Location: Klafthmonos Square

Nikos Oikonomidis, a leading violinist of Aegean island music, performs at Klafthmonos Square with Kyriaki Spanou and the Keros Music Group. The Traditional Island festival brings the sound of the Cyclades into the centre of Athens through violins, songs and rhythms associated with island panigiria. This is one of the festival’s strongest traditional-music events, especially for visitors who want to hear Greek music connected to dance, community and summer custom, without leaving the city centre.

17

A Victim of Society & Mechanimal

Date: May 15, 2026
Location: Ipitou Street

A Victim of Society and Mechanimal bring Athens’ alternative music scene into the street with guitars, electronics, vocals and a darker urban sound than many of the festival’s open-air parties. Ipitou Street, close to Syntagma and Plaka, gives the event a compact central setting. This is one of the sharper music entries in the remaining program, especially for readers who want to hear Greek independent acts outside a conventional venue. It also shows how the festival uses smaller streets as live stages.

18

E=MC²

Date: May 17, 2026
Location: Amerikis Square

Amerikis Square hosts E=MC², a street-culture event that brings music, movement and public performance into one of Athens’ residential neighbourhoods. The location matters, because it takes the festival away from the better-known central squares and into a part of the city with its own social history and everyday life. This is one of the strongest choices for readers interested in youth culture, urban expression and neighbourhood-based events. It also adds another layer to the festival’s use of public space.

19

Innersense pres. LTJ Bukem LIVE & Junior SP

Date: May 17, 2026
Location: Theseus Square

LTJ Bukem is one of the most important international names in this year’s festival program. A defining figure in atmospheric drum and bass, he helped bring jazz, soul and deep electronic textures into club culture. His Athens appearance with Junior SP at Theseus Square gives the month a major electronic-music highlight in an open-air public setting. For anyone following dance music, this is one of the most obvious dates in the programme and one of the strongest headline events of the festival.

20

TiACF 2026 Closing Party

Date: May 31, 2026
Location: Athinas Street

The festival’s Closing Party will be on Athinas Street, one of the centre’s main commercial arteries, running between Omonia and Monastiraki. This year’s finale brings disco, Greek DJs, a large sound system and lighting to the street for the last major gathering of the month. The location gives the closing party a direct connection to everyday Athens, with the Central Municipal Market, old shops, warehouses, food traders and constant pedestrian movement nearby. It is a fitting final event for a festival built around public space.
