Known for its religious feasts and festivals, as well as its inhabitants’ laid-back lifestyle, Ikaria also boasts a number of spectacular beaches.

7

Most of them are sandy, with strong waves and currents – recommended for good swimmers. If you like to play and swim in the waves, this is the island for you. However, in recent years the island has become very popular with a wider audience, as several beaches, especially on the northern side of the island, have become more cosmopolitan and have been equipped with sunbeds and beach bars. The good thing is that the island is very big and there are many beaches for every taste: crowded or less crowded, long sandy beaches or small bays, with or without waves.

Seychelles

The most popular beach of Ikaria is located on the south side of the island. Park your car high up on the road and walk down a short but steep path. The turquoise waters and wild rocky landscape attract many visitors to this small bay. Go early enough to get a spot of shade at the back of the beach near the rocks. The beach is not serviced, thus you’d better bring water and some snacks with you. Due to the crowds, it is best enjoyed in the early morning or late afternoon.

Nas

With dense vegetation and a small river flowing into the Aegean Sea, Nas is one of the most distinctive beaches of the island. The beach is known for its strong currents, so be careful. In case of strong currents, stay close to the shore. However, it is a gorgeous beach with coarse sand and fine pebbles, turquoise waters and beautiful rock formations on the left and right. The water deepens steeply and is crystal clear. Although it is not a serviced beach, there is a tavern on top that also serves coffee.

Armenistis

One of the most popular beaches of Ikaria due to its proximity to the homonymous settlement that offers many accommodation and dining options. The waters are crystal clear, but they quickly become deep and sometimes the sea can be very rough. On the beach there are umbrella rentals and a beach bar. The neighbouring bay, Mesakti, has similar characteristics but the waters are shallower.

Kampos

One of the largest and most peaceful beaches on the island, Kampos is equipped with a few straw umbrellas and a canteen selling the essentials. It has fine sand, relatively shallow waters and often large waves. Here too you should be aware of strong currents and swim with caution.

Iero

Located at the north-eastern end of the island, near the airport, Iero is one of the most quiet beaches as until recently access was quite difficult. The beach is not serviced, thus make sure you bring water and snacks with you. With turquoise waters, big rocks on the right and left and a few tamarisks that offer nice shade all day long, Iero is also ideal for snorkelling.
