    Your Guide to Zakynthos

On this jewel-of-an-island, The Venetians named it ‘Fioro di Levante’ Flower of the East, you can be as one with nature, or party with the masses until dawn. Zakynthos, or Zante, can be all things to all people. The island boasts beautiful architecture and stunning natural scenery. It is also home to lively and busy nightclubs and bars. You can immerse yourself in its history, relax in its calm beauty, or party in its clubs and bars at all hours of day and night.

To the south and southeast package holidays are the norm, and the beaches can be packed. But the rest of the island offers wild forests and picture-perfect traditional villages. Arguably, Zante’s true highlight is the rugged West Coast where limestone cliffs lead down into clear blue seas.

Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta-Caretta) come to the golden sands of the island’s beaches to lay their eggs. Humans are not always compatible with these beautiful creatures. But those who are prepared to stand back in silent respect are greeted by a wonderful sight. Boats will take you to otherwise hard to reach destinations. Take a trip to Shipwreck Beach and you’ll pass the famous blue caves, before arriving at a sandy strip of beach surrounded by sheer rock faces. At its centre is a rusty, marooned ship.

If taking a car around the island, you can visit characterful villages, quirky churches, and ancient monasteries. Be sure to visit some of the excellent museums to learn about post-Byzantine art, Agriculture, or Natural History. And then it is time to sample the local food and drink at the seemingly-endless string of cafes, restaurants, and bars.

Whether you come to the island to party, to relax, or to adventure in the beautiful natural landscape that is Zante, a little piece of paradise awaits.
