Many Rethynmo beaches offer water sports, especially in the northern resorts, and there are opportunities for snorkelling and diving in the clear, warm seas. Inland, the area is a hikers paradise with alpine paths, lofty peaks, and desolate gorges to explore either on your own or with a guide. Similarly, there is a cycling network of 168km taking in the mountains, the town of Rethymno and the lowland coastal routes. Boats criss-cross the southern beaches around Agia Galini, while in Rethymno itself a couple of road trains explore the city and head to nearby mountain villages.

Paradise Diving Centre

Join the experienced crew at Paradise Diving for a wreck dive only 5 minutes away from their centre in Petres, 12km west of Rethymno. The Skorpios was tourist boat that made excursions on the north coast. Taken out of service, the boat was moored in Rethymno before attempting a journey to Georgioupoli in 2005 for repairs. Unfortunately, the vessel sank in 25m of water but now it forms part of a memorable dive in the beautifully clear waters. Paradise Diving Centre (Tel.: 28310 26317, www.diving-center.gr)
