The pace of life on Serifos is more attuned to casual exploration than full on adventure sports but there are still plenty of diversions to tempt the adventurous. There is a well respected diving school at Livadi with twenty years of experience that offers underwater excursions for all abilities and there are outfits that rent out boats to discover the lesser known shores on the island. There are water sport agencies at Livadi and Livadakia that rent out canoes, SUPs and flyboards, while mountain bikers love the steep slopes and dirt trails on Serifos.

Chrysoloras Winery

Just above the Monastery of Taxiarches are the organic vineyards of the Chrysoloras Winery, the first certified wine production facilities on Serifos. With a strong vinicultural tradition, including its own indigenous varieties, Serifos has a terroir of mineral-rich earth, steep terraces and, of course, sun-drenched slopes. The flagship white, Ksiro Chorio, is made from native grape Serifiotiko and there are rosé and natural wines to sample. The views across the island are sublime and a sunset tasting is the ideal way to discover the small-yield hand picked wines. The wines are also found in restaurants, shops and bars all over the island. Chrysoloras Winery (Tel.: 69772 75993, www.chrysoloras.gr)

Hiking

Serifos boasts many fascinating walking trails across the wild landscape that lead to a working vineyard, to a monastery, and there are centuries year old paths trodden by miners until the 1960’s. There are over 80 kilometres of paths on the island and many lead to magic small bays with a swim in secluded coves as a reward. Well signposted and maintained, old donkey trails run through abandoned mountain villages, past forgotten chapels, and a trip to the Cyclops Throne offers magnificent sea views.

Kerameio

In Kato Chora, Kerameio pottery studio showcases original handmade ceramics in a delightful shop with collections of traditional and contemporary Greek wares. There is also a workshop where families and children can join the Play with Clay programme and learn how to make their own pottery and bring home a unique souvenir. Kerameio (Tel.: 22810 51669, www.kerameio.gr)

Serifos Sunset Race

Every year thousands of runners and swimmers descend upon Serifos to compete in a series of races. Held as the sun falls below the horizon in late September, the island comes to life as competitors run alongside beautiful beaches and swim in the blue seas around Serifos. There are competitions and demonstrations for children and a party atmosphere as people celebrate their achievements.
