Not renowned for its infrastructure, the island struggles to offer much in the way of activities. The pleasures of the island are in its uncrowded beaches, its clear, sparkling waters and the archaeological sites within walking distance. A hikers paradise, Sikinos has the ruins of ancient settlements, distant beaches, and cliffside walks scented with wild thyme and oregano.

Hiking

Walking was always a big part of life on Sikinos; the bus from Alopronoia to Chora only began operating in 1980’s and before that donkeys and mules were the preferred mode of transport. A well signposted network of trails takes you through thrilling countryside with agriolithies, stepped pastures that make the most of the hilly terrain, and past abandoned shepherd huts and animal compounds. There are easy hikes for a couple of hours of distraction through to more demanding circular treks.

Manalis Winery

Continuing the island tradition, the Manalis winery is located in an area that has produced wine for millenia. Four labels are produced; a white, a rose, a red, and a sweet wine from sun dried grapes, and tastings are offered. The walk from Chora through fields and with views over the sea is especially nice and the vineyard has one of the better restaurants on the island, Styrofilia.
