In central Macedonia, among verdant forests, covered in bodies of water, two prefectures hold three of the most beautiful, quaint and multifaceted towns of Greece.

27

Edessa, Naoussa and Veria are unique travel destinations with magical settings, charming local architecture and long history. For the citizens of Thessaloniki these towns are popular winter destinations, while for Athenians they add to the appeal of northern Greece. At the same time, these three towns have a special culinary tradition with age-old recipes that easily come together with modern day gastronomy.

Beautiful taverns using excellent local ingredients and modern restaurants with refined recipes and rich menus that highlight secrets of the local cuisine in dishes with a twist. One thing is certain: at these excellent restaurants, you’ll have great food, with the focus on meat, trachanas (a traditional kind of pasta made with flour milk or yogurt), pasta, fine cheeses and amazing wines.

Veria

12 Grada

In a beautiful, welcoming space, the restaurant 12 Grada serves a very wide selection of dishes varying from traditional dishes to unique culinary suggestions you’ll only find here.

The building stands out from a distance: an impressive, stone building built on a hill with two comfortable spaces linked via a wooden indoor staircase. If you want to enjoy the view of the town, there’s also a veranda with large windows. In the summer, the veranda opens, and you have your meal overlooking the verdant hills around town.

The delicious, fresh salads are a must, with the 12 Grada country salad, their trademark, standing out. The appetizers are also great, including oven-baked vine leaf dolma, Veria beans, mushrooms in garlic sauce and basturma pie. From the mains, we recommend the deconstructed veal, and the very juicy, fragrant lemon pork stew. And make sure you leave space for dessert because they have a great dessert list, as well as an interesting wine list. We recommend the armenonville ice cream and the excellent semifreddo.

Vergiotiko

It’s worth going to Vergiotiko, in the centre of Veria, for its amazing atmosphere alone. The restaurant is built in the rock and the outdoor space is unique, with a picturesque watermill surrounded by lush vegetation.

The food is excellent, and they use fine ingredients, focusing on local tradition, including some modern additions that make all the difference. At Vergiotiko, you’ll try some specialties that they’re very proud of, as well as some very unique suggestions.

The giouvetsi (orzo with beef in tomato sauce) with oxtail, feta sauce and basil oil stands out, it melts in your mouth. As well as the homemade dolmadakia with a truly exceptional sauce. The pan sauteed chicken, as well as the 90-day aged steaks are also great.

Naoussa

Harama

Harama restaurant is located 7km outside Naoussa, in the scenic Arkohori, surrounded by an oak forest, housed in a beautiful building made of stone and wood. If you’re here in the summer, you’ll enjoy the garden with the lovely view, while in the winter, the hall is warm and elegant. The stone walls and the well-kept wooden furniture add elegance to the space, there’s an antique cabinet standing proud and majestic in one corner, and, of course, the lit fireplace that adds an extra touch of cosiness.

At Harama, the chef-owner Stefanos Lafaras has created the menu, and with great care he presents some favourite traditional recipes with his own twist, bringing them up to date. Try the sarma and the wonderful meatballs in brine, as well as the wild greens with fried egg and the local mantza (traditional dish with vegetables sauteed in a pan, served with tomato sauce), while from the mains, we recommend the beef cheeks in tomato sauce served with homemade pappardelle and the wild boar with the unforgettable plum sauce.

Oinomagiremata

A very cute restaurant in the centre of Naoussa that resembles a folk museum due to the beautiful traditional objects on display, ranging from small everyday objects to a traditional costume in a display case in the middle of the room.

Oinomagiremata is an experience in its own right, with a lovely garden for when temperatures rise, and a special warm hall. You’ll try delicious local products made with ingredients that come here straight from the farm, like the mushrooms that the owner collects himself in the mountain, and if you’re lucky, you might be there on mushroom assortment day, a fun and educative process.

Try the batzio saganaki, the juicy Harama tigania , the perfectly cooked mushrooms with mint rice, and a delicious dish named ‘Hanoumissa’ that consists of beef and aubergine.

Edessa

Ousies

Located in central Edessa, this small tavern with the stone elements and the beautiful wall decorations makes you feel very welcome instantly.

They serve many local dishes and great bulk wine, as well as strong tsipouro (traditional pomace raki) on a few wooden tables. We recommend the vegetable millefeuille, the talagani cheese, the formaggio chicken and the fluffy grilled beef patties that are served with perfectly grilled pitta bread.
