Kinsterna

Sprawled out within the verdant landscape near the spectacular Monemvasia castle of Laconia, the Kinsterna Hotel epitomizes a unique fusion of Byzantine architecture and luxury accommodation. It is a remarkable mansion, whose history fades into the depths of time, dating to between 1667-1783 and 1720-1784 AD.

Among its many treasures here is Room 37, once the private apartment of Lina Kapitsini, the last Lady of Monemvasia, who stayed there until the 1970s. The room, with a magnificent fireplace and a glass floor revealing Byzantine architectural elements, is a must-see. The view from the window spans over the sea and lush slopes, while below its stone-built veranda lies an inner courtyard with a large cistern, from which the hotel derives its name.

Admirably, Kinsterna has focused on reviving ancient practices such as grape harvesting, wine and tsipouro production, olive picking, olive oil making, bread kneading, soap making, and weaving on traditional looms, ensuring the local community benefits from sustainable practices.

Its position is another attribute. It is set on a gentle slope amidst 15 acres of vineyards and centuries-old olive and citrus groves, and close to the beaches and the village of Yefira, the hotel itself is a destination, complete with a museum reflecting its rich past. The mix of Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman influences is evident in its decor, offering guests a historical ambiance combined with luxe modernity.

Meanwhile, its newly built residences offer a modern retreat, while rooms in the old mansion, like Room 25, built on the old prison site, offer a unique glimpse into the past with their medieval atmosphere and Kinsterna’s signature wall stencils.
