Στο νοτιοανατολικότερο ηπειρωτικό σημείο της Ευρώπης, λίγο πριν το ακρωτήρι Μαλέα, κοιτώντας δυτικά, μέσα σε μια φιλόξενη γεωφυσική αγκαλιά από νερό και εύφορη γη, απέναντι από την παραδεισένια Ελαφόνησο και τα υπέροχα Κύθηρα, βρίσκεται η παραθαλάσσια κωμόπολη της Νεάπολης Βοιών.
Το αυτοκίνητο κινείται με ταχύτητα χαμηλή, απολαυστική στους επαρχιακούς δρόμους της λακωνικής γης. Οικισμοί και μικρά χωριά εναλάσσονται με στάνες και εύφορα χωράφια «κατηφορίζοντας» προς το νότο. Κάθε χιλιόμετρο που γράφει στο κοντέρ, τόσο μεγαλώνει η αίσθηση πως στο τέρμα του δρόμου η μόνη διέξοδος είναι η θάλασσα.
Έχοντας τον ήλιο δεξιά και τις έντονες σκιές να σχηματίζουν το ταξίδι, αυτή η γωνιά της Ελλάδας μοιάζει να ζει στους δικούς της ρυθμούς και κανόνες, μακριά από ταχύτητες και βιασύνες. Όσο πλησιάζει η ώρα του ηλιοβασιλέματος, τόσο πιο έντονα βάφεται ο ορίζοντας ασημί και οι φιγούρες της Ελαφονήσου αλλά και των Κυθήρων πιο νότια, αποχρωματίζονται και γράφουν ως σκούρες γήινες φιγούρες μεταξύ ουρανού και θάλασσας με τα όρια να μη μοιάζουν να είναι ξεκάθαρα.
Η Νεάπολη απλώνεται κατά μήκος του ήρεμου κόλπου και είναι χτισμένη αμφιθεατρικά στη ρίζα του ορεινού όγκου της Κριθίνας, ο οποίος καταλήγει στο ακρωτήριο Μαλέα, στα νότια. Σχεδιάστηκε από τον Γερμανό αρχιτέκτονα Μπίρμαχ, ο οποίος έχει σχεδιάσει επίσης τη Σπάρτη και την Κάρυστο και χτίστηκε μεταξύ του 1837 και του 1840 στη θέση της αρχαίας πόλης των Βοιών (Βάτικα). Ο σχεδιασμός της είναι άρτιος και καθαρός. Οριζόντιοι και κάθετοι δρόμοι οι οποίοι οδηγούν απευθείας στο παράλιο μέτωπο, σκάλες προς τις επάνω γειτονιές, κτίσματα με απεριόριστη θέα πάνω από τις στέγες των χαμηλότερων κτιρίων.

Η βόλτα γνωριμίας με την κωμόπολη της Νεάπολης είναι σύντομη και αρκούντως επεξηγηματική για την αρχιτεκτονική της ιστορία αλλά και την εξέλιξή της μέχρι τη σημερινή της μορφή. Ο Ιερός Ναός της Αγίας Τριάδας, το πιο επιβλητικό κτίσμα της κωμόπολης, είναι ορατός από κάθε πλευρά αλλά και από απόσταση από τους γύρω λόφους. Σπίτια παλαιότερων εποχών έχουν συντηρηθεί και διατηρηθεί ανάμεσα στις βιαστικές μοντέρνες κατασκευές φανερώνοντας μια άλλη εποχή στην ιστορία της Νεάπολης.

Στο παραθαλάσσιο μέτωπο φιλοξενούνται εστιατόρια, ταβερνάκια με θαλασσομεζέδες και ουζάκι μπροστά στο πεντακάθαρο κύμα, καφετέριες-σημεία συνάντησης των ντόπιων στην καθημερινότητά τους αλλά και αρκετά ξενοδοχειακά συγκροτήματα, μεσαίου μεγέθους, υποδηλώνοντας την τουριστική ανάπτυξη του τόπου, κυρίως τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες. Το άγαλμα του Βατικιώτη Ναυτικού στην αρχή του προβλήτα, τιμά τη ναυτική παράδοση του τόπου και τους ανθρώπους που την υπηρετούν ακόμη και σήμερα. Στη θέα από ψηλά, με νότια κατεύθυνση, παρατηρεί κανείς την κυκλοφορία μεγάλων εμπορικών πλοίων τα οποία διασχίζουν τα στενά μεταξύ Κυθήρων, Νεάπολης και Ελαφονήσου με σχετικά μεγάλη συχνότητα.
Ψαρότοπος και αλιευτικό λιμάνι γνωστά για χρόνια είναι η Νεάπολη. Σημείο εκκίνησης για τους αλιείς που βγαίνουν στα ανοιχτά του λακωνικού κόλπου για λίγες ώρες αλλά και για περισσότερο χρόνο στα ακόμη πιο απομακρυσμένα νερά του Μυρτώου Πελάγους και αρκετά νοτιότερα, μέχρι τα Αντικύθηρα. Το φρέσκο ψάρι δε λείπει από την προσφορά στις ταβέρνες αλλά και τα ιχθυοπωλεία της περιοχής. Μέσα στη νυχτερινή παγωνιά φωτογραφίζω την άφιξη του Βασίλη Βατίστα στο αλιευτικό καταφύγιο Αυλόσπηλου, στη βόρεια είσοδο της Νεάπολης, καθώς ξεψαρίζει κάτω από το δυνατό φως του προβολέα της βάρκας του κάνοντας το πορτοκαλί των διχτυών του να δείχνει ακόμη πιο έντονο.

Το «Λιμανάκι», η ταβέρνα που βρίσκεται εδώ, δεν είναι μόνο σημείο συνάντησης των ψαράδων αλλά και ένα από τα διασημότερα ψαροφαγάδικα της Νεάπολης. Στη δεύτερη επίσκεψή μου στο αλιευτικό καταφύγιο, την επομένη αξημέρωτα, σε θερμοκρασία που έκανε το συνθετικό μου πανωφόρι να κολλάει παγωμένο στην πλάτη μου, παρατηρώ τον Γιώργο Βαρβαρέσο, να απελευθερώνει από τα δίχτυα του ίσως το μεγαλύτερο θράψαλο που έχω δει ποτέ μου. Τα νερά της περιοχής διατηρούν ακόμη και σήμερα τον αλιευτικό τους πλούτο αν και έχει φτωχύνει σημαντικά συγκριτικά με το σχετικά πρόσφατο παρελθόν, όπως μαρτυρούν οι ίδιοι οι αλιείς.

Μια εκδρομή προς το Νότο
Η λακωνική χερσόνησος από τη Νεάπολη μέχρι το ακρωτήρι Μαλέα, είναι όμορφη, άγρια, με μεγάλες υψομετρικές διαφορές αλλά και, κατά τόπους σκληρή και άγρια. Η διαδρομή προς το χωριό Βελανιδιά στα ανατολικά, έχει στροφές, πρωτόγονη βλάστηση, καταπληκτικά τοπία και άχαστα σημεία για ανάπαυλα με θέα προς το Μυρτώο πέλαγος αλλά και το Αιγαίο κατ’ επέκταση, με το δαντελωτό της ακτογραμμής ζωγραφισμένο στη βάση του καμβά.
Το ίδιο το χωριό βρίσκεται σχεδόν κρυμμένο μέσα στη ράχη του βουνού, λευκό με κεραμοσκεπές, μεγάλη υψομετρική διαφορά, ραχούλες να συγκατοικούν μαζί του και έντονη την αίσθηση της απόδρασης. Το λιμανάκι στη ρίζα της πλαγιάς μοιάζει απόκοσμο, σημείο εκκίνησης για ταξίδι χωρίς συγκεκριμένο προορισμό. Αποστάσεις χιλιομετρικές σχετικά μικρές οι οποίες μεγαλώνουν από το ανάγλυφο της χώρας, αυτό το απίθανο πάντρεμα βουνού και θάλασσας σε τόσο μικρές, οπτικά, διαδρομές.

Επιστρέφοντας στο βασικό δρόμο προς το ακρωτήρι, λίγο μετά από τον Προφήτη Ηλία, ο οποίος εδώ δεν βρίσκεται, όπως αναμένεται, στην κορυφή κάποιου απόκρημνου βουνού αλλά σε ένα γεωλογικό πλάτωμα ακριβώς επάνω στη θάλασσα, ξεκινά το «σεληνιακού τύπου» άγριο τοπίο μέχρι να φτάσει κανείς στο Γεωλογικό Πάρκο και το Απολιθωμένο Δάσος. Βράχοι διάσπαρτοι αριστερά και δεξιά του καλοφτιαγμένου δρόμου, διαφόρων μεγεθών και σχημάτων, μοιάζουν να τοποθετήθηκαν με φροντίδα και προσοχή από κάποιο καλλιτεχνικό χέρι. Τοπίο άγριο, αφιλόξενο, στεγνό και τραχύ μα για όλους αυτούς τους λόγους απίθανα γοητευτικό.
Μικρές καλαίσθητες πινακίδες δείχνουν το δρόμο προς τα αριστερά για το αναρριχητικό πάρκο και, με μια γρήγορη ματιά, καταλαβαίνει κανείς αμέσως γιατί. Βράχοι ψηλοί, κάθετοι, με εναλλαγές στους βαθμούς δυσκολίας αναρρίχησης, μοιάζουν με διαδρομές ιδανικές για τους αθλητές του συγκεκριμένου σπορ. Ακριβώς απέναντι πια, στο τέλος του οδικού δρόμου, στα όρια του μονοπατιού που οδηγεί μέχρι το Ακρωτήρι, επάνω στη θάλασσα που σκάει τους αφρούς της στα βράχια, αντικρύζει κανείς το γεωλογικό θαύμα του Απολιθωμένου Δάσους. Ξεκάθαρα ξεχωρίζουν οι κορμοί δέντρων, οι βάσεις τους, η ύπαρξή τους εδώ από πάντα. Ένα τοπίο μαγικό δημιουργημένο υπομονετικά από τη φύση σε βάθος εκατομμυρίων ετών. Το Γεωλογικό Πάρκο Αγίου Νικολάου, συγκαταλέγεται από τους ερευνητές και μελετητές του στα σπουδαιότερα της Ευρώπης.

Πούντα – Ελαφόνησος
Ένα άλλο γεωλογικό θαύμα, αυτό της ανέγγιχτης ομορφιάς, της ωχρής αμμουδιάς, των γαλαζοπράσινων νερών της απέραντης διαύγειας, είναι η περιοχή της Πούντας και της Ελαφονήσου, λίγα μόλις λεπτά με το φέρυ, απέναντι. Η Νεάπολη σε κάθε της αναφορά σχεδόν συνοδεύεται με το «πάντρεμα» αυτών των κοντινών της καλοκαιρινών, κυρίως, προορισμών. Η διαδρομή μέχρι το πορθμείο της Πούντας είναι ένα μικρό ταξίδι ανάμεσα σε περιποιημένους ελαιώνες, τοπικές καλλιέργειες, φωτεινά χρώματα, μυρωδιές και αρώματα της φύσης αλλά και της ανθρώπινης δραστηριότητας.

Από τη Νερατζιώνα μέχρι την παραλία Μάγγανου και πιο πέρα, την παραλία Χαμόκελο, μπροστά από τη λίμνη Στρογγύλη, απλώνονται μερικά χιλιόμετρα υπέροχης αμμουδιάς και καθαρών νερών, προορισμό πολλών επισκεπτών οι οποίοι δεν επιθυμούν να περάσουν απέναντι. Το πλάτωμα της παραλίας Πούντα δε, θυμίζει τοπία άλλου γεωγραφικού μήκους και πλάτους, τόπους της Αραβικής Χερσονήσου αλλά χωρίς τα αντίστοιχα πολιτιστικά στοιχεία και τις καμήλες. Η τεράστια αμμουδιά της Πούντας οριοθετείται από κάθε κατεύθυνση μόνο από το βαθύ μπλε και ανοιχτό σμαραγδί της θάλασσας.

Η επίσκεψη στην Ελαφόνησο μια εποχή διαφορετική από την υψηλή τουριστική καλοκαιρινή, φανερώνει όλους τους λόγους για να τη λατρέψει ο ταξιδιώτης. Οι απαλές αμμουδερές παραλίες του Σίμου, οι διάσημοι αμμόλοφοι με τους κέδρους και οι θάλασσές της ως πισίνες, δεν αφήνουν αμφιβολία καμία για την υπέροχη ιδιαιτερότητα του τόπου αυτού. Οι δύο άλλοι ταξιδιώτες εκτός από εμένα που κάθομαι για ώρα στην ψιλή άμμο, εκεί όπου το καλοκαίρι συμβαίνει το αδιαχώρητο, λιάζονται μερικές δεκάδες μέτρα πιο πέρα, μοιραζόμενοι μαζί μου σχεδόν συνομωτικά τη μοναδικότητα των στιγμών αυτών.

Πίσω στον οικισμό, έχοντας ακόμη αρκετή ώρα για το πλοίο της επιστροφής στην ηπειρωτική χώρα, διαλέγω το ψάρι που θα απολαύσω στο ταβερνάκι της «Ουρανίας» απευθείας από τα δίχτυα του ψαρά απέναντι, σχεδόν πριν προλάβει να δέσει καλά – καλά το καΐκι του στο μώλο. Μικρές χαρές που δημιουργούν σπουδαίες αναμνήσεις.

Φινάλε
Ο ουρανός έχει πια δώσει χώρο στα χρώματα της νύχτας καθώς μοιραζόμαστε με ντόπιους θαμώνες ιστορίες και εμπειρίες στο μεζεδοπωλείο «Ο Ναύτης», σε ένα από τα ομορφότερα διατηρητέα κτίρια της παραλίας της Νεάπολης. Οι γνωριμίες δεν είναι το πιο δύσκολο πράγμα τέτοιες ώρες σε τέτοιους τόπους, ακόμη και για έναν περαστικό ταξιδιώτη. Συνταξιούχοι φίλοι, μετανάστες μια ζωή ο ένας στην Αστόρια και ο άλλος στην Καμπέρα της Αυστραλίας συναντιούνται εδώ, πρώτο πράγμα μετά την άφιξη από το αεροδρόμιο του ενός, μοιραζόμανοι τα νέα τους με συγκίνηση και ψυχή. Ενώ στο διπλανό τραπεζάκι, μιλάμε για ελαιόλαδο βιολογικό, προϊόν πολύτιμο της περιοχής με τον καλλιεργητή του, Ολυμπιονίκη σε αγώνες θαλάσσης πολλές δεκαετίες πριν. Η ομορφιά ενός τόπου δεν είναι ποτέ πλήρης χωρίς την ομορφιά των ανθρώπων του.
