Η πολυσχιδής ακτογραμμή του νησιού και τα γύρω νησάκια Τσουγκριάς, Τσουγκριάκι, Ασπρονήσι, Μαραγκός, Αρκόνησος, Καστρονήσια, Τρουλονήσια, Μυρμηγκονήσια, Πρασονήσι, προσφέρουν μία μεγάλη ποικιλία από φρέσκα ψάρια και θαλασσινά. Τα πολλά αιγοπρόβατα δίνουν την πρώτη ύλη για την παραγωγή τυριών όπως το χλωρό, η μυζήθρα και το γαλοτύρι και τα άπειρα αρωματικά βότανα και τα λουλούδια είναι η βάση για την παραγωγή εξαιρετικής ποιότητας μελιού -υπάρχει πιστοποιημένη μελισσοκομική επιχείρηση με βιολογικό μέλι.

Ο συνδυασμός των άγριων χόρτων και των λαχανικών με ψάρια, καλαμάρια, όστρακα και «τσόφλια» όπως λένε στη σκιαθίτικη ντοπιολαλιά τον αστακό, τις καραβίδες και τις γαρίδες είναι κάτι που χαρακτηρίζει τη σκιαθίτικη τοπική κουζίνα.

Ξεχωριστά εδέσματα είναι ο αστακός με χόρτα, τα τα καλαμαράκια με χόρτα και κρεμμύδια, οι καραβίδες με κολοκυθάκια και ντομάτα, η ψαρόσουπα. Άλλα εδέσματα είναι οι πίτες όπως η «καλαποδιά» με άγρια χόρτα και η στριφτή τυρόπιτα, που η προέλευσή της είναι θέμα διαμάχης ανάμεσα στη Σκιάθο και στη Σκόπελο, η φάβα με σαρδέλα, το ψάρι στιφάδο, η πεσκανδρίτσα με σκορδαλιά.

Ανάμεσα στα παραδοσιακά γλυκά της Σκιάθου, παραδόξως, το πιο γνωστό και αγαπητό είναι ο μπακλαβάς που προσφέρεται σαν κέρασμα στους γάμους. Χρωστάει την ύπαρξή του στους Μικρασιάτες πρόσφυγες που εγκαταστάθηκαν στο νησί μετά την Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή του 1922 και έβαλαν τη σφραγίδα τους στην κουζίνα της Σκιάθου. Παρασκευάζεται σε δύο εκδοχές: ξανθός με αμύγδαλα και καστανός με καρύδια.

Τα «χαμαλιά» είναι τριγωνικά γλυκά του τηγανιού γεμιστά με καρύδια και μέλι και πασπαλισμένα με ζάχαρη άχνη. Άλλο ένα παραδοσιακό γλυκό είναι τα αμυγδαλωτά που φτιάχνονται με λευκό αμύγδαλο, και ανθόνερο, ψήνονται στο φούρνο και πασπαλίζονται με άχνη ζάχαρη.

Τέλος, το «άσπρο» είναι ένα μοναδικό γλυκό του κουταλιού που φτιάχνεται με ψιλοκομμένο λευκασμένο αμύγδαλο, σιρόπι ζάχαρης και λεμόνι που ανακατεύονται επί ώρα πολύ πολύ καλά ώσπου να αποκτήσουν λευκό χρώμα, κάπως σαν το γνωστό υποβρύχιο.

Οινική Ταυτότητα

Αν και το νησί είναι καταπράσινο και υπάρχουν αναφορές για το το σκιαθίτικο κρασί από την αρχαιότητα, ο αμπελώνας του νησιού είναι πολύ περιορισμένος -υπάρχει ένα πιστοποιημένο οινοποιείο που καλλιεργεί τις ποικιλίες Μαλαγουζιά, Ασύρτικο, Ροδίτης, Ξινόμαυρο, Λημνιό. Ιστορικό κρασί είναι ο «Αλυπιακός οίνος», που το όνομά του προέρχεται από τον Ιερομόναχο Αλύπιο, τέταρτο ηγούμενο της Μονής, αν και σύμφωνα με τον Αλέξανδρο Παπαδιαμάντη το όνομα σημαίνει πως διώχνει τη λύπη. Είναι ερυθρός οίνος και παράγεται από από τοπικές ποικιλίες ενώ οι μοναχοί χρησιμοποιούν και σταφύλια από άγρια αμπέλια. Στη Σκιάθο παράγεται και τσίπουρο (ΠΟΠ) καθώς και λικέρ από καρυδάκι και από βύσσινο («κερασό»).
