Just a stone’s throw away from the city of Chios, lies the charming seaside settlement of Agia Fotia. Its pristine beaches, crystalline waters, and an air of sophistication make it a fascinating fusion of untouched nature and modern comforts.

Dotting the landscape are mastic trees and olive groves, silent testaments to the region’s agricultural roots when the local populace primarily engaged in farming and animal husbandry.

Agia Fotia, affectionately known to locals and regular visitors of Chios’s southern and eastern coastlines, is a quaint and modern beachside haven, complemented by a small but lively settlement that has sprung up around it.

Interestingly, the name “Agia Fotia” doesn’t appear in the calendar of saints. The settlement and beach officially go by the name Agia Foteini, a title also bestowed upon an old chapel nearby. As local lore has it, this chapel was established where a burning bush mysteriously appeared, a mere 800 meters from the sea, lending to the popular name “Agia Fotia” or Holy Fire.

Initially a subsidiary settlement of neighboring Neochori, Agia Fotia has since carved out its independent identity. Perched just 10 meters above sea level, the amphitheatrically designed village offers captivating views of the Aegean Sea and the distant shores of Asia Minor. As of the 2011 census, it was home to 49 full-time residents.

The modern Agia Fotia, beloved by Chios’s younger generation, has witnessed significant tourist development. Its charming character and proximity to Chios make it a favorite holiday destination for the island’s youth.

The Journey from a Fishing Spot to a Holiday Hotspot

Agia Fotia of today stands as a symbol of successful tourist development, characterized by its cosmopolitan appeal. It is a popular vacation choice for the youth of Chios, thanks to its proximity to the city and the rest of the island.

The present-day charm of Agia Fotia, however, veils a humble past that is still perceptible through the mastic and olive trees dotting the landscape. The settlement began to see significant development only around the 1970s. Today, it boasts its highest population since its inception.

In the 1950s, despite the presence of Agia Fotini’s chapel, the beach area, then known as “Kamari,” was deemed unremarkable. Its deep waters served as docking spots for trade boats transporting hay bales for South Chios’s farmers. The coastal lands were unsuitable for cultivation due to the harsh sea breeze that damaged crops.

The transformation began with the opening of the historic Stavri café, a popular haunt for local fishermen. The beach slowly emerged as a favorite summer retreat for the youth of nearby villages, despite being accessible only by a dirt road. As the settlement started to take shape, the name Kamari faded, and Agia Fotia became prevalent. Over time, the inhabitants gradually embraced tourism development, resulting in infrastructural advancements that pivoted the local economy towards the sea and tourism.

For a caffeine fix or a hearty meal, the local cafes operate as beach bars, providing food and beverages. “Splash” is a preferred spot for coffee, swimming, and evening cocktails. With the new season, the popular “Skinos Summer” returns, serving pizzas and pasta, while the “Blue Note” bar-cafe is also worth a visit.

For dining, visitors often frequent “Elephant Chios” and the “Psarokokalo” tavern. However, the “Cardinal” should not be missed, especially for pizza and pasta lovers, as it offers a taste reminiscent of Italy.

Reaching Agia Fotia

Agia Fotia is conveniently located just 14 kilometers from the town of Chios, eastward. A short 10-minute drive should suffice to get there. If you’re without a vehicle, local buses and taxis provide comfortable alternatives.

The Agia Fotia Beach

Agia Fotia beach impresses visitors with its white pebbles and pockets of natural shade, an excellent alternative to the beach bars’ sunbeds. The crystal-clear waters deepen gradually, reflecting beautiful hues while maintaining their cleanliness, a virtue that has earned the coast a Blue Flag rating. It’s noteworthy that during the peak summer months, when the beach buzzes with visitors, a lifeguard is always on duty to ensure safety.
