Rhodes, as the grandest island of the Dodecanese – and holding the 9th position in size within the Mediterranean – sports an impressive shoreline extending over 253 kilometres. Its strategic position serves as a crossroad between the Aegean Sea, Cyprus, and the neighbouring coasts of the Middle East.

All these factors contribute to Rhodes’ year-round allure, though it’s in the summer months that it pulls the most visitors. Holiday-makers, both Greek and international, consistently opt for it as their getaway of choice, often even prolonging their stay until October to revel in the warmth of the seas.

Beyond the iconic city of Rhodes with its signature Castle of the Knights, further gems of the island are waiting to be unearthed, such as the age-old settlement of Lindos. Laden with history that stretches back to antiquity and bursting with natural splendour, Lindos is home to the emerging hotspot of Agios Pavlos beach.

Emerald depths framing a vista of the ancient Acropolis

For the locals of Lindos, tradition governs that those dwelling in the lower precincts make a beeline for the larger eponymous beach. On the other hand, the residents of the upper district lean towards the cosier Agios Pavlos, leading to a less saturated stretch of sand. But as the beach is discovered by a greater number of tourists each year, it’s gradually stepping into the limelight. And why wouldn’t it? Agios Pavlos, with its captivating mix of raw beauty and historical significance, presents an idyllic tableau.

Legend suggests it was here Saint Paul was compelled to anchor in 60 AD, while en route to Rome for his trial. Along with fellow captives, they found refuge from hostile sea conditions. Getting the timeline right is essential, as many conflate this incident with an earlier visit to Rhodes (circa 54 AD), during which he proclaimed Christianity on his third significant tour of the Roman Empire.

This tale lends the area its name, and visitors will notice a small chapel dedicated to Saint Paul, intensifying the beach’s quaint allure. Standing stark white against the surroundings, the chapel is perched just before the rugged coastline. It’s no surprise that countless couples choose this spot each year to tie the knot, lured by the promise of a uniquely picturesque backdrop.

Agios Pavlos presents as an almost enclosed bay, its slender opening to the sea bestowing upon it a likeness to a lake at first glance. The landscape masterfully merges rocky terrain with the sea (many adventurous souls scramble up the rocks for a dive), while the beach is a medley of sand and pebbles. It also flaunts an exceptional seabed, making it a go-to for diving enthusiasts who should arrive armed with their snorkelling gear.

The waters of Agios Pavlos, warming and gradually deepening, wash over you in hues of turquoise and emerald, providing an irresistible invitation to swimmers. And as you indulge, you get to appreciate the stunning view of Lindos’ ancient Acropolis. It sits proudly, visible atop a steep adjacent rock, towering 116 meters high. With roots reaching back to the Archaic Period of ancient Greece (around 700 BC), it continued to be inhabited until the 16th century. For the Knights of Saint John, it served as the secondary fortress, only bested by their stronghold in Rhodes City.

Arriving at Agios Pavlos, you’ll quickly realise it’s not lacking in amenities. Not only are loungers and umbrellas at your disposal, but you’ll also find a snack bar, a refreshment kiosk, and a taverna, ready to cater to your needs – be it a coffee, a chilled water bottle, soft drinks, beers, snacks, or lunch and dinner for those wishing to remain until dusk.

How to Reach Agios Pavlos

For those lodging in Lindos, Agios Pavlos is a short stroll away. If you’re residing in the city of Rhodes, remember that Lindos is a 55-kilometre journey, about an hour’s drive towards Cape Krana on the island’s eastern fringe. The route is direct.

If travelling by car, park it in the designated area you’ll spot just before reaching the coast, and cover the brief remainder on foot. Without a vehicle, hop onto the Rhodes KTEL bus which frequently services Lindos. For those with a seafaring spirit, arriving by boat is also an option: in the summer months, particularly, you’ll observe several speedboats anchored in the bay’s deeper waters.
