Built on a steep slope at an altitude of 966 metres, Lagadia, in central Peloponnese’s Arcadia region, covers an area surrounding the Tripoli-Pyrgos highway. The village is split into two by this highway.

12

All of the village’s other roads and trails run uphill and downhill. Lagadia is heritage listed as a result of its numerous stone mansions, built by the village’s many skilled builders, renowned during the mid-19th century and believed to have worked all over the Peloponnese during this period, building houses, schools and other projects.

Lagadia’s sought-after builders generated wealth for the village, which flourished in the late-19th century, its population reaching 7,000. Following the early decades of the 20th century, the art of stonemasonry was gradually replaced by other building methods and the village’s economic growth began to contract. The local population shrunk as many locals ended up relocating to larger towns and cities in Greece or emigrating.

The Ladon Reservoir, an artificial lake, is situated close to Lagadia, approximately 22 km away. It was created in 1956 as a result of the construction of a hydropower dam at the waters of the Ladon river. The dam is on the west side of the lake. The other side features the Kyra bridge, an arched bridge from the 13th century. This bridge is covered by the lake’s elevated water level in winter and, as a result, is only visible in summer.
