With an unreliable and limited bus service, the best way to travel around Skiathos is with your dependable Avis car.

Skiathos Town and the Bourtzi fortress

An islet in the port of Skiathos, Bourtzi is home to the ruins of a 13th-century Venetian fortress. A bridge links the islet and the town, so it is accessible on foot. In Skiathos’s main town (Hora), the whitewashed, red-roofed houses cluster together to make a picture-postcard scene.

The Papadiamantis house-museum

Alexandros Papadiamantis was a Greek writer whose house has been turned into a museum. His short stories were often set in the area. He also wrote novels full of adventures which highlight life on the Sporades islands. The house itself is a typical example of the architecture of the island. It is located in the centre of Hora.

Papadiamanti St.

Full of and busy bars and cafes in the evening, this is Skiathos town’s main street. There are great restaurants, tavernas and boutiques.

The islet Tsougrias

Located across the port of Skiathos, reached by boat. The beach here is stunning. The church of Agios Floros is a must-see.

Organised tours and activities

There are several diving schools to help you explore the sea and the more than 300 fish species. Try water-skiing at several locations. Most popular is Vassilias beach. Horse-riding and hiking routes are well run and maintained. Daily tours head to the islands of Alonissos and Skopelos (famed for its use in the filming of the movie, ‘Mamma Mia!’)

Skiathos castle

Located in the northern part of the island, the Kastro (the castle) was built in the 14th century to protect the locals from pirates. It is worth a visit just for the stunning views. The best way to get there is by boat. Tours depart from the town daily.

Sea Caves of Skiathos

Two caves close to the beach of Lalaria. You’ll nead to hire a boat to get up close. But it’s worth it.

The Blue House Art Gallery

Unique jewellery and artwork can be found here. The gallery blends modern with the traditional. Located near the old port in the Old Town.

Lake Strofilias

Just 200 metres from Koukounaries beach. Lush, cool area which can bring a little relief in the height of Summer.
