Historic Kalavryta, in the North Peloponnese, was unfortunately put on the map after the brutal Nazi massacre of its towns folk in 1943, but the following years have been kinder and most visitors since 1988, when its ski resort was opened (15km away), come to enjoy mountain sports.
However, the winter-weekend attraction for many skiers and snowboarders, can also provides numerous other recreational options throughout the year, making it an ideal destination not ony in the snowy winter months or for those seduced by the snowy slopes.
10:00 – start your day at Diakofto.
Upon entering Kalavryta, the first thing noticed is the old stone train station, one of the town’s landmarks. It is still in use and the line begins at the seaside town of Diakofto, passes through Zahlorou, and finally reaches Kalavryta, completing a magical journey over deep, rocky gorges and through thick forests. The ‘rack‘ railway system, a pioneering engineering feat for its time over 120 years ago, enables the train, fitted with special cog wheels, to cling on to the rack railway line at sections that are steep. Passing through the Vouraikos gorge, this little train covers a 22-kilometre distance and climbs to 750 metres above sea level. It requires approximately one hour to cover the entire line. Enjoy a good meal in Kalavryta at the family-run Varvitsiotis taverna, established nearly half a century ago. A classic spot for quality food in the region, its traditional meat dishes and homemade appetisers include soft and light biftekia (seasoned mince patties), grilled lamb chops and unforgettable smoked pork steaks. For coffee with a view, homemade sweets and a range of hot chocolate drinks, take the road heading towards the ski resort to reach the Pentarchos café. Built of stone and wood with large picture windows, it offers a marvellous view of the mountain slopes and serves great cappuccino and exceptional walnut cake.

Kalavryta’s pedestrianised 25th Martiou Street is the focal point of activity with a range of shops, cafes and food outlets. Begin your stroll from the train station and, passing the main square, head up the cobbled street for a look around. Local foods, craftwork and souvenirs are on sale in the small traditional shops. For dinner a good option is the Peri Orexeos taverna, situated close to the end of 25th Martiou St. The oldest taverna in Kalavryta has re-opened its doors and serves up classic dishes such as rooster in tomato-based sauce, lamb with olive oil-and-oregano sauce as well as pork shanks with honey and delicious handmade delicacies served as small meze dishes.
