Thessaly’s Vlach cuisine offers a wide range of traditional dishes that are both popular with locals and a treat for tourists. From savoury meze such as sausage with leek, kokoretsi, and kebab, to tasty pies made with wild greens, cornmeal, greens, and feta cheese, there’s something to suit every taste. If you’re a fan of fish, don’t miss the grilled or fried trout in fresh butter served in the villages of Diava and Panagia.

These dishes are made even more delicious by the abundance of fresh apples and walnuts in the region. When it comes to dessert, Thessaly is famous not only for the Halva of Farsala but also for the delightful spatula – a walnut pie with cream and almonds. With its unique blend of flavours and textures, this sweet treat is a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Valia Calda

Valia Calda is the only restaurant of its kind in the Meteora region that specialises in local cuisine inspired by the traditional recipes of the Vlach population from the Pindos Mountain range. They offer a unique opportunity to taste beautifully presented, modern dishes inspired by old Greek recipes that have been passed down through generations, made with local ingredients like wild herbs, mushrooms, river trout (both cooked with a delicious sauce and as carpaccio), baked cheese with walnuts and well-cooked, succulent lamb. There are several vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. As for the seasonal pie, made with handmade phyllo pastry and fresh, home-grown ingredients.

Ziogas

With a cosy stone hall, wooden ceiling, and a menu centred on exceptional local meats, this is a must-visit dining spot that, unlike most other restaurants, serves monastic recipes. Try the liver, sausage, and lamb chops, along with freshly cut fried potatoes. The desserts, such as the walnut pie with cream, halva with orange and chocolate, and the aromatic quince with halva, are also worth trying. With the imposing Meteora rocks in the background, the taverna has been a staple in the area for decades and offers special dishes that makes it a success.

Meteoron Panorama

Located on the cliffs with magnificent views, Meteora Panorama offers refined versions of classic Greek dishes using locally-sourced ingredients. The updated menu offers excellent choices at various price points, including slow-cooked baby lamb, clay-pot stewed beef, and truffle risotto. The stylish and cosy decor in the interior is impressive, but the terrace seating is the star of the show, providing stunning views of the rocky backdrop. Don’t forget to complement your meal with a selection from their expertly curated wine list. Make sure to call ahead and reserve a table for an unforgettable dining experience.

Established in 1925, it is one of the original restaurants in the area and continues to be one of the best. The menu is filled with their grandmother’s specialities, such as the delectable eggplant saganaki, mouth-watering moussaka, and savoury homemade sausage. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available for those with dietary restrictions. The restaurant’s rustic interior exudes warmth and charm, while the spacious leafy patio, accompanied by the sweet songs of birds, provides a perfect atmosphere year-round. Situated conveniently on Town Hall Square, the restaurant is located near the local bus stop, taxi stand, and tourist information centre.

Qastiro

The restaurant gets its name from the village that once stood in its place during the Ottoman Empire. Unlike most other restaurants in Meteora that specialise in grilled meats, Qastiro offers a unique bistro-style dining experience with a wide variety of light bites and finger foods, including delicious pizzas and sweet treats. The rustic stone building and cosy interior provide a chic and homely atmosphere, while the outdoor dining terrace faces remarkable views of the Holy Spirit rock.
