Brunch in Athens has moved well beyond eggs and a flat white. Kayana, Greek scrambled eggs with tomato, is served a few streets away from shakshuka and breakfast burritos, and Naxos arseniko cheese shows up both in a charcoal-baked greens pie and in a cream spread over focaccia. Eggs Benedict come in the most versions, from smoked salmon on sourdough to a spinach-pie Benedict in Omonia and lobster with asparagus at the Grande Bretagne. Much of the food starts with bread baked in-house and ingredients from small Greek producers. The settings vary just as much: there’s a fig-shaded courtyard in Neos Kosmos, a former garage in Koukaki and rooftops facing the Acropolis.
What ties it all together is the pace. In Athens, brunch is less a meal than a way to spend the morning. You might take a walk below the Acropolis, catch the smell of fresh bread from a side street, then sit down at a table under the trees while the city slowly wakes up. It can be as short as a coffee and a cardamom bun, or it can stretch into a second round of pancakes, and nobody will rush you either way. Some kitchens serve brunch every day and others only on weekends, so check before you head out. After that, the only thing left to decide is whether to order another coffee as late morning turns into afternoon.
