In Agistri, enjoy fresh fish, green olives (whole, crushed, or cracked) in brine or olive oil, and an exquisite aromatic pine honey produced from the large pine forest that covers the island – many say it’s unique in the Eastern Mediterranean. Additionally, local wines (primarily from the Roditis variety), including retsina and strong tsipouro distilled in a traditional distillation vat, are available. Exceptional local extra virgin olive oil (Manaki variety), capers, and aromatic herbs are just a few more characteristic products of the island.

The local cuisine bears the influence of Arvanite cuisine in some of its pies, such as musenta or musounta (a type of thin, crispy spinach pie without phyllo) and kolokithopita (courgette pie) or laklori. Some pizzerias offer Greek pizzas with local potatoes and garlic baked in a wood-fired oven to give popular international street food a Greek gastronomic touch. The sweet side of local gastronomy is represented by “votsalaki” (the island’s traditional almond-based sweet), loukoumades (honeyed doughnuts), Tiganites (deep fried crispy dough), and spoon sweets.

Where to eat

Aponisos: A famous taverna, the only one on the eponymous islet with a crystal-clear beach just a short distance from Skala. Order fresh fish, octopus, oysters, and lobster pasta. Good grill and fried dishes. (Agistri, Limenaria, 2297091359)

Toxotis: Operating non-stop since 1981, this place serves meze dishes, delicious cooked meals, and meat dishes. Be sure to try their very good grilled souvlaki. (Agistri, Skala, 2297 091283, Facebook)
