Exarhia may have been undergoing a profile change over the years, but, even so, this central Athenian district has remained one of the capital’s most historic and renowned.

10

The district’s development began back in the mid-19th century, when it was selected to host departments of the National Technical University of Athens and the University of Athens. As a result, Exarhia became an attraction for younger crowds and intellectuals, forging a character that was maintained throughout the 20th century. From the post-dictatorship years, 1974 onwards, the district also drew many printing and publishing companies, which prompted the emergence of specialised book stores as well as antique book stores in the area.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Exarhia went along with the Greek capital’s wider building transition, resulting in the arrival of multi-storey apartment blocks, which, however, did not drown the area in cement. Sound town planning as well as altitude differences of roads that end up at Lycabettus hill and Strefi hill, a precious spot of greenery, helped new buildings co-exist harmoniously with older apartment blocks. Over time, many of these buildings were classified as heritage properties, the Ble Polikatikia (Blue Apartment Block), a prime example, being an architectural symbol of the interwar period.

The district has maintained many of its old characteristics as a result of a number of cafes, restaurants and live music venues, attractions for the city’s students. At the same time, Exarhia appears to be entering a new phase. An Athens metro expansion plan includes a prospective station in Exarhia.

doValue, through the www.altamiraproperties.gr real estate platform, is offering 1 heritage full-floor apartment measuring 145 m2 in central Athens, an investment opportunity for homebuyers wishing to live in the historic Exarhia district’s wider area.
