The Depo quarter of Thessaloniki is one of the most charming areas of Greece’s Northern capital. The quarter got its name from the old tram depo on Vasilissis Olgas St, which was both the starting point and the terminal for the old horse-drawn tram serving the riviera. The Depo itself has fallen into disrepair since the tram stopped running in 1957.

This sought-after location has many late 19th and early 20th century mansions and villas designed by renowned architects for the city’s wealthy tradesmen. One such is Casa Bianca now home to the Municipal Gallery, and designed by the ‘eclectic’ architect Arrigoni.

Another mansion of note is Villa Allatini, designed by Vitaliano Poselli, commissioned by The Allattinis an Italian-Jewish family, reflecting the strong presence of Jews in the area before their persecutions in World War II: The wealthiest lived in Depo District, more precisely in the historic Uziel neighbourhood.

Villa Allatini is where even the Sultan Abdul Hamit II of the Ottoman Empire stayed for a time (under house arrest) when he was deposed by Kemal Atatürk’s Young Turks. The Allattinis’s also owned the famous mills that still bear their name, with the old factory now included in Thessaloniki’s listed building (since 1991).

The Depo quarter borders the districts of Kalamaria, Analipsi and Vizantio. And despite being densely populated retains an appeal infused by its important historical past.
