What to see
Thirassia may be overshadowed somewhat by its sister, Santorini, but it has its own enigmatic places to visit.
Potamos: A traditional settlement with cave houses and blooming courtyards, located above Riva.
Agrilia: A very old village, the largest on the island until 1928, which is now uninhabited. One can see the remains of the cave houses and cellars that have now become one with nature. The elaborately decorated church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, built in 1887, stands out.
Dormition Monastery: Located on Cape Tripiti, the monastery was built in 1851. Its Russian golden temple is remarkable, as is the breathtaking view. Near the monastery there is a prehistoric settlement with preserved walls, ceramics, and stone tools.
Where to swim
Due to the volcanic morphology of the island, its coastline is steep and inaccessible, but you can discover several unique diving spots by boat.
Riva: Dark sand, crystal clear waters and a few tamarisks. In the settlement you will also find a few quaint little tavernas.
Saint Irene: Dark grey pebbles, rugged landscape and a view of the caldera. There are no facilities so come prepared.
Korfos: Black pebbles, pumice stones, rocks and clear waters. Be sure to bring an umbrella and some snacks.
What to do
The islet of Thirassia offers stunning views from every angle. Choose a path and grab a spot to admire the Aegean Sea, the eerie volcanic landscape of the island will accompany you along the way and you will find a chapel to take a resting breath. Manolas, or Hora, the main settlement of the island, is built on the edge of the caldera and overlooks Imerovigli.
Its small houses and picturesque alleys testify that here time moves slowly. Starting from here, you can walk to Profitis Ilias, from where you can enjoy the views out to sea. Continuing on you will reach Kera, the – now abandoned- small settlement with cave houses, overlooking the Old and New Kameni.
Must: Every morning, as the sun rises behind Santorini, the light from Manolas is utterly enchanting. The view is equally magnificent when the moon is full and rising over the caldera.
An excursion that shouldn’t be missed is the one to the volcano of New Kameni by boat. Water supplies and close-toed shoes are essential for the hike to the live volcano.
