The old town of Corfu, with its rich cultural heritage and picturesque streets, is a place where it is easy to lose track of time. Strolling through the small squares, known as “kantounia,” and exploring the museums and other attractions can take hours.

Taking a break, enjoying a flavourful cup of barista coffee and indulging in a delicious drink or dessert is a must. Among the many options available, there are six small and unique cafes that stand out for their character and charming locations.

NOMI

NOMI is a standout establishment located on the busy Nikiforou Theotoki street, known for its vaulted arches and small, well-kept shops. As soon as you lay eyes on it, you’ll be drawn in by the red metal tables lined up outside this great delicatessen. NOMI is, in essence, a small, lovely, and impeccably kept deli stocking their shelves with products from small, carefully selected Greek producers, all of the highest quality.

After purchasing unique delicacies such as cured meats, cheeses, pasta, herbs, honey and olive oil, you can enjoy a buzzy coffee and a sugar-free dessert, made specially for NOMI. These desserts, such as the chocolate cake, lemon cake with blueberries, and apple pie, are delicious and healthy, made with stevia instead of sugar. You can enjoy them along with local refreshments or herbal teas on the few tables located on the pedestrian street in front of the window.

You should also visit NOMI in the evening to enjoy one of the cocktails created by their team, all inspired exclusively by Greek spirits and flavours. Some are versions of famous cocktails, others are their own creations, but one thing is for sure, you’ll love them. Try the original NOMI Spritz with sour cherry and grapefruit cordial, mavrodafni wine from Patras and bergamot spirit. Or order an aromatic Ragazza with ouzo, limoncello, mastic, and lime while enjoying the view of the lit arches right across from you, with the hanging lambs, a typical and gorgeous image of Corfu.

PLOUS

When you’re hunting for literary treasures and a cozy place to enjoy a cup of coffee, look no further than Plous – a charming bookstore located on the same street as Nomi. The tiny shop is spread across three levels and exudes a warmth and familiarity that could easily be mistaken for a shop in London’s Bloomsbury neighborhood. The shelves, which are 110 years old, it was once an old apothecary, are stacked with a variety new and old books.

The friendly owners, Konstantina and Dimosthenis, will be happy to help you find the perfect book and happily recommend some of their favorites. And why not pick one of the books available for leafing through and spend some time reading whilst sipping on a fine cup of coffee.

On the upper level of the bookstore, you’ll find a cozy corners to sit in solitude alternatively take a seat at the bar or at a table in front of the window. Tip: You must try their homemade ginger cordial.

PICCOLO

As we head to the Old Town Hall Square, one of the most grandiose locations in Corfu, we are surrounded by majestic buildings that pay homage to the period of Venetian rule. Enjoying this picturesque view while sipping on a coffee is made possible at Piccolo Espresso Bar. You can choose to sit on colorful cushions on the stone-built seating or in the more secluded small garden to the side.

On sunny mornings, it’s the perfect spot for your first coffee of the day, especially if you order their specialty house blend. Pair it with a fluffy cake, traditional tsoureki (sweet bread) with two different types of nut spread, or a healthier vegan option. You’ll also appreciate the peacefulness of the square before the influx of tourists.

Piccolo Espresso Bar is also an ideal stop in the evening, when the Venetian buildings are lit, for a unique cocktail like the exotic Ginie with gin, passion fruit, and mint, Mangolino with rum, mango and coconut puree (in the summer) or the more wintery Apple Crush that combines bourbon with green apple puree and cinnamon. It’s the perfect toast to the wonderful Kerkyra nights.

PUPPET

Staying on the same square, you’ll come across the charming Puppet café-bar, located next to the Old Town Hall. The owner, Giorgos Tsalavoutas, who has worked in many renowned Athenian cafes, has created a beautiful space with an attention to detail that results in an aesthetically pleasing ambiance.

From the colorful mosaic inside, the elegant bar with comfortable chair-stools, the green lamps, the vinyl collection on the shelves, to the tables with playful mosaics, everything invites you to make a stop and become part of the setting.

At night, those in the know gather here to enjoy a drink from the unique selection of 600 brands of alcoholic beverage and spirits that this lovely bar offers.

GABAO

The Bizi kantouni is a picturesque cobblestone alley that leads from the heart of the old town to the charming neighborhood of Kampielo. Nestled at the edge of this charming area is the elegant café-bistro Gabao, offering a perfect spot for a refreshing cup of coffee or a delicious, healthy meal. The Hungarian owner, Gabriella, who moved to Corfu a few years back, welcomes guests with a warm smile and serves up a variety of delicious dishes including omelettes, savory tarts, bruschetta, and tortillas.

Her unique espresso fredo with lime and tonic is a must-try. Enjoy your meal with a glass of wine in the evening, or relax outside with a warm blanket if the weather gets chilly. Inside, the décor is a mix and match of vintage furniture that has been carefully restored, giving it a new life. The space also serves as a mini art gallery, showcasing the works of the owner’s sister. These interesting art works make for great gifts or as an ideal souvenir from your trip.

FAVELA no17

Nestled deep within the winding streets of Kampielo, Favela no17 is a welcoming café located in one of the area’s charming, tiny squares. The bougainvillea-covered entrance, minimal tables on the cobblestone street, and tightly-packed surrounding houses, complete with laundry hanging out to dry, all contribute to a feeling of familiarity and peace that is perfect to enjoy with a cup of coffee.
