Thessaloniki, a city that knows how to live it up, promises a special New Year’s Eve, unlike others.

The northern city transforms on the last night of the year to become one with the people. Free-spirited celebrations are widespread, shops offer food to revellers on the streets, and barbecues are lit all over the city for a singular festive mood.

If, however, you prefer some detachment from the city noise, or would like to treat your partner to a special New Year’s Eve gift, a night at the Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki, decorated to perfection for the festive season, is a great idea. The hotel’s festive-season decorations are by interior designer Dimitris Brazas. The impressively decorated Christmas tree is a great backdrop for Instagram shots.

After enjoying a perfect night’s sleep on a soft Hyatt mattress, guests can head down to the spa for further relaxation or have a first cocktail for the day at the delightfully decorated dining area.

As for the New Year’s Eve celebration, couples and groups of friends may enjoy the wonderful dishes available on the festive-season menu, including fillet steak with pumpkin puree, mushrooms and truffle sauce, and also try any of the hotel’s signature cocktails. We recommend the Meditai, a rum-based mix, while making a New Year’s wish under the stars at the hotel’s garden.

The next day, don’t forget to wake up on time – or, perhaps, not sleep at all – for the New Year’s Day brunch at the Hyatt’s specially designed buffet. Just in case you are wondering, wine will also be among the selections. Individuals who choose to stay at home for New Year’s Eve can also enjoy the Hyatt’s special menu for the night, also available as a take-away version, specially wrapped with extra surprises.

They are the most beautiful, but they can also be the luckiest days of the year. The New Year’s Eve gambling tradition takes on a special sparkle when it takes place at the most impressive Greek casino, where especially these days it transforms into an adult Disneyland, a micro-universe made of surprises and excitement. Primarily, though, the casino is an experience that, with the right responsibility, can make a difference as a memory of a New Year that may be special, but can also mark a better and happier year to come. At Regency Casino Thessaloniki these days offer an experience that has been shaped after a demanding and detailed preparation in order to deliver special thrills.

Ktima Gerovassiliou

Epanomi, Thessaloniki, tel. +30 2392044567

Besides offering entertainment and rest, a stay at the Hyatt also offer guests the opportunity to visit interesting places on the outskirts of town, far from the city traffic, including a lovely Sunday morning excursion at the Ktima Gerovassiliou winery, just a 15-minute drive from the hotel. The winery, situated on the slopes of the Epanomi area, offering fresh air and wide open space, celebrates wine in a fitting way, both in terms of taste and overall experience. The Gerovassiliou winery, producing one of our favourite wines, the Viognier – with a stylish yellow label, which we tasted straight from the barrel before it was bottled – maintains an immaculate vineyard, as well as a garden with an extensive range of Greek plants and roses. The vineyard also has a wine museum, featuring a rare collection of bottle openers and various other wine-related accessories, for a complete experience. Having visited both the winery and the museum, it becomes clear why this winery has made the world’s top 100 list. It is also worth visiting the café, offering a view of the vineyard and housed at building of modern architecture, to taste some of the winery’s countless varieties, or its best-selling flagship wine, Asyrtiko with Malagouzia, a fusion of Santorini austerity and aromas of the country’s north. The winery also features “Little Moon”, a work by sculptor Kostas Varotsos and work by esteemed Greek painter Yiannis Moralis.

Local, Thessaloniki

17 Palaion Patron Germanou, tel. +30 2310223307

Local is a hangout for all times of day, every day of the week, and is a particularly special place to be at during the festive season. Making a stop at this place of cosy surrounds during shopping or a night out is highly recommended.

The spot gathers mixed crowds for a vibrant, uplifting atmosphere, ideal for enjoying your favourite aperitif or the spot’s signature dish, the tagliata, as regulars pointed out to us. The place is in the heart of the city.

Gioulietta Spritzeria

33 Palaion Patron Germanou, tel +30 2310-242020

The festive season, especially New Year’s Eve, is ideal for a walk around the city. The relaxation of the experience can be accentuated with a fine aperol or a good-tasting aperitif at the city’s very first spritzeria, Gioulietta Spritzeria. It serves anything you may have ordered at an authentic Roman aperitivo bar while in the Italian capital, from bitter biz bermouth to classic aperol spritz. Drinks here can also be combined with a cheese platter.

Pelosof

Pelosof Arcade, 22 Tsimiski

This historic arcade, featuring interwar period architectural design and until recently home to the café Toms, now hosts a new café-restaurant-bar, Pelosof, named after the arcade. The spot, whose impressive design is minimal, prepares great cocktails, such as the signature aurora highball.

Αrmenoville

102, Mitropoleos Street, Thessaloniki+30 2310 525112

It has been a while now since the Armenoville, Thessaloniki’s trademark sweet, a combination of dessert and ice cream with a velvety texture, has once again become fashionable. A semifreddo dessert, it is adored by both ice cream enthusiasts and cream cake aficionados. The sweet was established and popularized by the traditional confectionary shop Armenoville, now modernised with minimal design and elegant exterior colours. The spot offers a number of variations of the classic Armenonville sweet. We singled out the version with Chios mastic, majestic cream and a layer of kataifi – a must for all visitors.
