On the east coast of Sithonia, or the second leg of Halkidiki, and specifically in Vourvourou, the lacy coastline forms dozens of beautiful beaches. Directly opposite and in close proximity are nine small islands: Diaporos, Agios Isidoros, Petronissi, Kalamonissia, Abelitsi, Elia, Peristeri, Kalogria and Prasonissi.

The stunning natural environment in the mainland extends to the islands and especially to the largest one, Diaporos. Turquoise waters, shady pine trees by the sea and sandy beaches. The islets are in close proximity to the coast and it won’t take you more than 20 minutes by boat to reach even the most distant one.

The bay of Mount Athos, the area between the second and third leg, is usually serene. In Vourvourou there are many small boat rental companies, for which no licence is required. Alternatively, you can arrange a water taxi transfer or organise a day trip by boat.

If you want to combine fitness and fun, you can rent sea kayaks on the coast of Vourvourou, with which you can explore the islands. Keep in mind that there are no dining options on any of these islands, so be sure to bring all the necessary supplies with you.

Diaporos

Start from the largest island, Diaporos, which covers an area of 3.2 square kilometres. Diaporos is covered by pine forest, and no one lives there permanently. However, there are several holiday homes and villas, mostly owned by local businessmen who were the first to discover the paradisiacal island. In Diaporos you will also find a few accommodation options, from the luxurious Tiamo Secrets villas (tiamosecrets.com) to family apartments.

Kryftos, on the north side of the island, is the first natural cove in sight, as boats usually anchor here. Because it is sheltered from the winds, swimming in Kryftos is a sheer delight, regardless of the weather, and the waters are shallow and warm.

The most famous beach of Diaporos, however, is that of Myrsini, with crystal clear turquoise waters, white sand and picturesque little coves, which is why many people call it Hawaii or White Beach. Try to arrive early before the big crowds.

Blue Lagoon

The reef surrounding the islets is the reason why the waters around them are all exotic, clear and blue. You can drop anchor at any point offshore and dive, but the best spot is the narrow passage between Diaporos and the island of Agios Isidoros. It looks like a natural swimming pool as the sand is white and the water is shallow, which gives it a unique colour and incredible transparency.
