Reaching Giola isn’t child’s play. It demands a certain resilience from its travelers. An hour’s journey from Limenas, Thasos’ bustling hub, then an arduous trek across the rugged landscape awaits. Yet, the charm of this place is intoxicating, pulling you towards it, rewarding the brave with a sight to behold.

Giola is a miracle of nature. The result of relentless waves and ceaseless winds sculpting a rocky enclosure over countless centuries. Spanning approximately 20 by 15 meters and about 3 meters deep, it’s a testament to the Earth’s undying creativity. But of course, the locals have a more romantic tale for its inception.

To the residents, it’s known as “Aphrodite’s Tear“. As the legend goes, Zeus himself carved out this slice of paradise for the sole purpose of admiring his lover’s swimming form. The ethereal beauty of this place does lend itself to such mythical explanations.

The pool’s temperature stays a touch warmer than the surrounding sea, its colors shifting through every imaginable shade of blue and green with the sun’s daily journey. The natural rock ledges invite sun-seekers, while thrill-seekers can dive from the cliff edges, which tower up to 8 meters above the pool. A word of caution though, with the depth being just 3 meters, reckless plunges are discouraged. Diving headfirst is a definite no-go.

When you decide to journey to Giola, keep in mind that it doesn’t cater to the typical tourist comforts. You’re stepping into raw, untouched nature, so come equipped – water and sunscreen are as vital as your spirit of adventure. Don’t let the absence of luxuries deter you; complement your Giola experience with a quick drive to the friendly waters of Psili Ammos beach, a mere ten minutes away. There, the comforts of a beach bar and sun loungers await.

Your adventure to Giola will start with a 2-3 kilometer dirt road stretch in the region of Astrida. Parking your vehicle, you then follow the trail marked out by etched arrows on rocks, finally reaching this breathtaking natural pool in about 20 to 30 minutes.

If your wanderlust hasn’t been entirely sated, Thasos has more in store. A paradise for hiking enthusiasts, filled with countless beautiful trails, Thasos invites exploration. The island’s nightlife pulsates in Limena and Potos. If seafood tickles your taste buds, you’re in for a treat with local sardines and shrimps. Remember to try the island’s prized throuba olives.

Seeking authenticity? Maries will transport you back to the days before tourism waves hit Greek shores. In this amphitheatrical village, you’ll witness some of Greece’s most awe-inspiring sunsets – a spectacle to be savored, not rushed. Trust me on this, you’ll want to linger.
