North and North-East Attica (Slopes of Mount Parnitha and Mount Penteli)

Marathon is an area with a rich history and abundant natural beauty. In the archaeological site of Ramnous is the famous sanctuary of the goddess Nemesis, which is the most important sanctuary of the deity in Greece.

Other points of interest include the unique artificial lake of Attica (Marathon dam), the pine forest with pine trees, one of the few in the Mediterranean, the wetland and the beach of Schinias. Visitors to the area can also take a guided tour of the European Artos Museum in Varnavas.

Mt Penteli is ideal for nature walks, and attractions in the area include the Tower of the Duchess of Plakentia, where summer theatre performances are organised, the Monastery of Penteli, founded in 1578, and the cave of the Lestarchos Davelis with the 12th century Byzantine churches of Agios Nikolaos and Agios Spyridon.
