Heavy snowfall in Attica occurred on Monday morning, January 24, due to the outbreak of the winter storm “Elpis”. The centre of Athens is dressed in white and the images are truly impressive. There is heavy snowfall in the northern, western and southern suburbs.

Citizens should be particularly careful when moving around. On Monday morning, the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection sent a message to Attica residents warning them of heavy snowfall in the coming hours.

Snow at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport 

Heavy snowfall covered Eleftherios Venizelos Airport in white, resulting in the cancellation of domestic and international flights. Shops at the airport were closed as workers were told by their employers to leave due to the weather conditions.

Metro traffic to and from the airport was interrupted

As announced by STASY, the metro trains to and from the airport were interrupted due to the snow.
Metro passengers heading to the airport can change to the suburban railway at Doukissis Plakentias station.

Electric railway: timetables on the section Piraeus – Irini

Heavy snowfall has caused problems on Metro Line 1 (electric railway). Traffic on the Piraeus – Irini section is running normally, while according to STASY, snow removal works are underway on the Irini – Kifissia section.
