Welcome to Psili Ammos, arguably the most well-known beach of Patmos, yet remaining elusive unless you’re prepared for a hike or a boat ride. The digital age has brought even the most discreet spots into the limelight, illuminating those special places once known only to a select few.

Psili Ammos of Patmos, located among the Dodecanese islands, is an exemplar. Just two years ago, it contended with locations like San Giovanni di Sinis in Sardinia or Argèles-sur-Mer in France, vying for the best “secret” beach in Europe title according to Travel & Leisure magazine, who ranked it fourth out of ten contenders. Its popularity continues to grow, though its “secret” status remains somewhat intact.

Now, despite its challenging access, it is revered as the quintessential Patmos beach, drawing a significant crowd during summer, unlike previous years. However, its unique character and tranquility persist, skillfully avoiding the usual beachside hustle and bustle.

The “golden” sand, tamarisks, and emerald waters add to its appeal

Psili Ammos lies in a bay on Patmos’ southwestern side, appreciated as the most secluded beach on the island, not just for its remote location but also due to its distance from other island beaches. Historically, it attracted visitors who appreciated free camping and nudism, who still visit the area, often congregating on the southern end. Tourist boats now bring substantial crowds here, particularly during August Sundays.

One does not merely stumble upon Psili Ammos, this remote spot of Arkos Island. It calls for effort, a conscious decision to experience the elements. This isn’t a location visited on a whim, especially when the winds whip up the waves, which can rise to 1.5 meters, rendering swimming a futile endeavor. But on calmer days, it’s an enchanting wonderland.

The sand is finely grained and deeply golden, creating a captivating scene, harmoniously cohabiting with the sparse samphire growing at the water’s edge, perfectly mirroring the emerald hues of the sea.

Despite the increasing number of tourists in recent years, Psili Ammos has held onto its authentic spirit. There are no umbrellas or sun loungers here. It’s a pristine coastline where you need to bring your own gear. Early arrivals may even find natural shade beneath the samphires.

As for food and drink, there’s no need to bring your own. The Psili Ammos Tavern operates during the summer months, offering a touch of modernity in this unspoiled environment. Here, you can enjoy cold water, soft drinks, beer, Greek and frappé coffee, and it’s well worth staying for a meal after a swim. The menu may be simple, but the local goat and chicken dishes are sure to impress.

Getting to Psili Ammos

Located a mere 10 kilometers southwest of the town of Patmos, Psili Ammos is not easily reached. There are no roads leading directly there. Unless you own a boat, your options to reach the beach are either by sea or foot. The sea route is simpler, though the boats servicing this route might be crowded during peak summer months. They depart almost daily from the Skala port (at 10 in the morning) and will get you to Psili Ammos in about 45 minutes.

The alternative involves a drive as far as possible past Diakofti beach, where you park and continue on foot. The trail leading uphill into the nearby hills may pose a challenge, particularly the twisty descent. However, reaching the highest point rewards you with a stunning view of the beach, reinforcing its tropical appeal. The entire hike should take no more than 25 to 30 minutes, depending on your fitness level.
