Lefkada, the beautiful Greek island of the Ionian Sea, offers various ways to reach its shores. Whether you prefer to travel by air, car, bus, or sea, there are options to suit every traveler’s needs and preferences.

Access to Lefkada is via the bridge that connects it to Akarnania, or from the airport in Aktion (18 km from the town).

By road, the distance from Athens is about 380 km, from Thessaloniki 420 km, from the port of Igoumenitsa 100 km and from Patras 170 km. The two ports are the main gateways from Europe.

By Air

Traveling to the island of Lefkada by air requires a bit of planning. Although there isn’t an airport on the island, the Aktion International Airport is only 20km away from Lefkada Town. During the high season, the airport offers connections to several European cities, including London, Amsterdam, and Helsinki.

However, it’s important to note that there aren’t any direct flights from Athens, so if you’re flying into Greece’s capital city, you’ll need to make other arrangements. Another option is to take a domestic flight from other Greek islands like Zakynthos or Corfu, which is operated by Sky Express.

By Bus

Taking a bus is a convenient and affordable way to get to Lefkada from Athens. The journey takes approximately 5 hours, with several daily departures during the summer season. Advance booking is recommended to secure your seat, especially during peak travel times. One-way tickets cost around 35 euros, while return tickets are available for about 65 euros (valid for one month). The buses depart from KTEL Athens Central Bus Station, which is easily accessible from Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport via bus X93, a direct 24-hour service that takes just over an hour, depending on traffic. Although there is no direct ferry connection from Athens to Lefkada, the island has two ports that operate ferries to surrounding islands. The ports of Nidri and Vassiliki offer routes to Kefalonia, Meganisi, and Ithaca. The ferry from Vassiliki to Fiscardo in Kefalonia is particularly popular for island-hopping in the Ionian Sea.
