Perfectly integrated into the lovely Crystal Waters hotel, in Nikiana, on the east coast, nine kilometres from the main town, DUENDE is a newly established restaurant that offers a special, poolside fine-dining experience with a view. The focus is on domestic recipes and products. Meat, fish and vegetables are favourite ingredients. Emphasis is placed on taste as well as presentation. Focus on details makes the difference. The lemon pie is pure satisfaction. It is made with lemon cream, basil pudding, strawberry compote, almond crumble, strawberry sorbet, finger lime, crispy meringues and strawberry sauce. The Greek-style ceviche – greater amberjack fillet marinated in citrus fruit juice with Corfu kumquat liqueur, mango, lime with avocado, sweet potato, tamarisk, chili and coriander – is a revelation.

TA KANIORIA

A family taverna, Ta Kanioria serves well-prepared food, offers a superb view, sense of romance, serenity and tables by the water. The spot, located in the seaside village Lygia, on the eastern side of the island, 5 km from the main town, is a classic choice for food in Lefkada. Diners here enjoy traditional Greek cuisine, imbued with renowned Ionian Island creativity and modern touches, in all its grandeur. The leavened sourdough homemade bread; geranium liqueur; fresh fish, bought from the local market as well as the village fishing boats; grilled calamari with Eglouvi lentils; fresh tuna fillet with sautéed greens; and the bourdeto fish dish, are all highlights at Ta Kanioria, as is the spot’s beautifully scented garden, filled with vegetables and aromatic plants used for the food. Diners seated at the veranda, seemingly suspended in mid-air, may enjoy captivating flavours created by chef Nikos Prokopis. He spent a successful period abroad before repatriating. The chef offers quality dishes, basing his work on a more refined, carefully crafted and, naturally, tweaked version of Mediterranean cuisine. International culinary trends are fused with local ways, while the menu is relatively compact, making it more functional. The grilled calamari, tender enough to cut with a spoon, is perfectly combined with a sensational tyrokafteri spicy cheese dip. The octopus, served with black hummus, is a dream. It is so tasty and imaginatively prepared. The spot also serves an amazing dessert, cream made with Amarena cherries and bitter almond mousse.

The eclectic wines, chosen with strict criteria, are Greek and imported. More than 50 wine selections, including established and up-and-coming labels, perfectly accompany the food on offer. If fortunate, you may get to enjoy a sunset dinner to the sound of live violins or saxophone, when musicians are brought in for special events.

AKROTIRION LEFKATAS

On the road headed towards some of Lefkada’s most renowned beaches, such as Porto Katsiki and Egremni, Akrotirion Lefkatas, at the village Athani, is a restaurant of lofty standards. It stands out for its finesse and quality, and, in addition, represents one of the island’s best value-for-money choices. A well-kept spot occupying two levels, its décor is sparse, which highlights the magical horizon spread out before you. Some thirty years ago, when tourism was knocking on the island’s door, the family behind this venture transformed its own home into a restaurant. The house was built in 1950 with a wooden framework technique for better earthquake resistance. The section now hosting the kitchen was previously the house’s lower level with where wine and olive oil were stored, while the upper level, now the dining space, served as the living area. This restaurant focuses on the goods offered by the local land and adds gourmet touches to traditional recipes, both seafood and meat-based.

All dishes are modernly presented. Various dishes of the day are also offered as extras, including kid goat in lemon sauce with rosemary, which melts in your mouth. A salad including fig, a mix of greens, plus prosciutto, croutons, parmesan and pomegranate vinaigrette is interesting. The European bass fillet with eggplant mousse, greens and Florina red pepper is exceptional, as is the beef cheeks dish with potato foam and wine sauce. The orange cake, served with ice cream, is incredible. Filipos, the family business’ second-generation owner, is the heart and soul of the enterprise. He left Athens with his family for the island, striving to keep Akrotirion Lefkatas’ standards high. The warmth of this place, its exemplary service, panoramic view, extremely pleasant staff, relaxed atmosphere, delicious dishes and the restaurant’s success certainly justify his efforts.

THYMARI

Tucked away amid the island’s historic centre, Thymari has made history of its own on the island since 2008, establishing itself as definite culinary attraction. The restaurant is situated on a narrow street off a seaside road, in the heart of the old town, at an old family house from 1940, detached from the town’s noise. It has been transformed into a highly stylish restaurant that meets gastronomic desires. Its two gorgeous gardens, opposite each other, with flowers and herbs, the simple, fancy-free décor, serenity, discreet atmosphere and cosmopolitan aura all contribute to an exquisite dining experience. Top-class ingredients are used to fuse Lefkada’s culinary ways with those of Greece, the wider Mediterranean and other parts of the world, resulting in a very imaginative menu, well-prepared dishes and superb taste, supervised by chef-owner Pantelis Papalavrentiou.

The menu includes handmade pappardelle pasta. All pasta served at Thymari is fresh and produced daily. Pasta selections include a recipe with beef fillet, porcini sauce and mint. The potato foam with poached eggs, Delimaris Lefkada salami, San Michali Syros cheese and black truffle powder stands as further proof of the chef’s philosophy, through which he chooses leading food products from around Greece, bringing them together in an original and satisfying way. The umbrina cirrosa fish with mashed potato and Jerusalem artichoke chips, fried caper and spring onion, as well as the charcoal-grilled pork neck with grilled pumpkin, eggplant, yoghurt sauce, tahini, spring onion and coriander, both well-received dishes, are proof of the multifaceted, diverse as well as familiar elements characterising this chef’s culinary creations.
