The Viros Gorge

Located in Taygetos, spans 19 kilometers and is known for its natural beauty and historical importance. The ancient Royal Road connected Sparta with the port of Kardamyli, passing through the gorge. Legend says that Pyrrhus, Achilles’ son, crossed the gorge to marry Hermione, daughter of Menelaus and Helen. The slopes of Taygetos along the gorge are covered with black pine forests, Kefalonia firs, and other trees. Exploring the gorge reveals ruins of the Lykaki Monastery, the 14th-century Monastery of Savior, the Agia Sophia Church in Gournitsa, and the Tombs of Dioscuri above old Kardamyli. The gorge offers various starting points for hiking, each with unique features.

Gythio

Situated in the southern Peloponnese, the port town of Gythio captivates visitors with its genuine Greek ambiance, characterized by striking old structures, neo-classical residences, and a stunning waterfront. Though facing challenges like a decaying infrastructure and an uncertain future, Gythio’s allure is rooted in its rich heritage and vibrant local culture. The town’s waterfront is segmented into three areas, each featuring distinct attractions such as the harbor, seafood tavernas, cozy cafes, and the town hall that hosts a neat little archaeological museum.

As the largest settlement in the Mani region, Gythio provides convenient access to landmarks like the Diros Caves, Mystras, and the Peloponnese’s southeastern coast. The town serves as an excellent base for exploring the southern Peloponnese, with Monemvasia and Elafonisos Island reachable through day trips. Spend evenings by the port, savoring meals at seafood tavernas.

Gythio is also home to Loggerhead sea turtle nesting sites, presenting an opportunity to support the Archelon Organization’s preservation initiatives. The town’s distinctive combination of history, culture, and natural splendor makes it a prime location for uncovering the southern Peloponnese’s treasures.

Mystras

Nestled on a steep mountainside amid lush olive and orange trees, Mystras, once a Byzantine capital and fortified city, is Greece’s most captivating medieval ruin. Walking the centuries-old cobblestones, visitors can explore the remnants of palaces, monasteries, and churches dating from 1271 to 1460.

Established in 1249 by Frankish leader Guillaume de Villehardouin, Mystras became the capital and seat of government under Emperor Michael VIII Palaeologos when the Byzantines regained control of the Morea. A flourishing cultural center, Mystras was home to the school of humanistic philosophy founded by Gemistos Plethon, which attracted intellectuals from all over Byzantium. Art and architecture thrived, evident in the town’s exquisite buildings and frescoes.

Under Ottoman rule, Mystras declined but experienced a resurgence after the Venetians captured it in 1687, developing a prosperous silk industry. However, the town’s decline resumed after the Turks recaptured it in 1715.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, Mystras has three interconnected sections: the kastro (fortress), chora (upper town), and kato chora (lower town). Highlights include the fortress offering stunning views, the ornate Convent of Pantanassa, the rock-built Monastery of Perivleptos with its intact 14th-century frescoes, and the Cathedral of Agios Dimitrios, featuring an impressive marble iconostasis and intricately carved wooden throne.
