Karpathos is not as famous for its beaches as it should be, but that’s probably a good thing as it means they aren’t yet spoiled by tourism. With an extensive coastline and many wonderful coves, the island offers countless options for swimming, snorkelling and boating adventures. You will find small and large beaches, with sand or pebbles, organised or untouched.

With numerous beaches along this expansive island’s coast, using your Avis car rental ensures the ultimate beach-hopping experience.

In the south, near Lakkí, you will find many sandy beaches with shallow, turquoise waters, all of which are organised. Further north and to the east, is the award-winning Apella beach. This beach situated on the eastern coast of Karpathos island, presents an idyllic destination that strikes a perfect balance between tranquil isolation and essential amenities. You’ll find soft white sands, crystal-clear waters, and a striking pine forest that nearly meets the sea.

For those who enjoy delving into the underwater world, Apella Beach is a haven, with diving opportunities that should not be missed. Tip: The charming Agios Loukas church, adorned with exquisite frescoes and murals of incalculable value, is another nearby attraction that is well worth a visit.

Just next to it is the beach at Kyra Panagia, a golden sand beach that has proven a timeless attraction. It is a beautiful, organised, and Instagrammable beach dominated by its characteristic chapel. On the other side to the west, lies Agios Nikolaos – often referred to as the “Hawaii of Karpathos” because of its exotic beauty. This beach is in a category of its own, as it is considered the best beach for surfing on the island, with visitors from Greece and abroad. To the west but further north, there are also the beaches of the village Lefkos, which are sandy with turquoise waters.

Additionally, there is Ahata, located in a small cove, which is a safe and family-friendly option with a quality standard in natural beauty and picturesque scenery. Amoopi, a clean and organised beach with waters capable of enchanting every visitor, differs slightly from the other beaches of the island, as the colour of the sea and its shallow waters resemble those of the Cyclades and more specifically the beaches of Koufonisia.
