Karpathos, a charming island once forgotten by the world, now finds itself on the travel radar, flaunting its natural landscapes and unique character. A sizeable island, it demands a generous chunk of time to truly appreciate its stunning nature, lovely beaches, scrumptious cuisine, quaint villages, and the deep-rooted traditions that locals still cherish.

Now, let’s talk about music—quite the essential element in Karpathos’ cultural fabric. Be sure to keep your ears open for panigyria, the church-based festivals that’ll leave an indelible mark on your memories.

To fully experience the engaging island of Karpathos, renting a car from Avis is the ideal way to make the most of your vacation.

Olympos village

Perched in the remote northern reaches of the island, Olympos village is a real gem. Nestled amphitheatrically on a mountainside, the village seems to dance with the gusty winds that weave through its narrow alleyways. The locals, a self-sufficient bunch, take care of their livestock and master various crafts. Many women can still be seen wearing traditional attire. Blessed with a breathtaking view of the sea, Olympos is an unmissable delight.

Musical tradition

As for Karpathos’ music, it’s a fascinating affair, particularly in Menetes, the birthplace of many of the island’s musicians. If you want to immerse yourself in the local tunes, attending a traditional festival should be high on your to-do list. The festivities at Olympos and Vrykounta, a little port village to the north, are nothing short of legendary. Expect to hear the melodious strumming of a lyra, the twang of a lauto, and the soulful sound of a tsambouna bagpipe. You might even catch a mantinades performance or witness traditional dancing. And for a peek into the past, visit the Folklore Museum in Menetes to see old, handcrafted instruments on display.

Culinary tradition

Now, let’s dive into the mouthwatering world of Karpathos’ culinary scene, where even the simplest of pleasures—like warm, freshly baked bread from a wood-fired oven—can make one swoon. Gastronomic tradition runs deep here, and you’ll find lovingly prepared dishes served island-wide. One of Karpathos’ claim-to-fame is its sumptuous goat in tomato sauce, a staple at traditional festivals and weddings. Rest assured, the goats come from local, free-range farmers. And, it’s not uncommon for island tavernas to grow their own vegetables, produce cheese, and hand-make pasta, like the renowned makarounes with onion and cheese.

Countless beaches

While Karpathos may not be famous for its beaches, it absolutely deserves recognition. With a sprawling coastline and numerous bays, you’re spoiled for choice—large, small, sandy, pebbly, serviced, or unspoiled. Head south to Lakki for sandy shores and shallow, turquoise waters, or venture north to Apella beach, where pebbles and deep, crystal-clear waters await, accompanied by a solitary taverna. Nearby Kyra Panagia boasts golden sands, while Agios Nikolaos, on the western side, is often called the “Hawaii of Karpathos.” And speaking of the west, further north you’ll find Lefkos village‘s sandy, turquoise-watered beaches.

Exploring the nature

Karpathos’ natural splendor beckons you to explore it. Choose a cool morning or afternoon and set off on one of the island’s many western trails. Around 60 marked paths lead to charming chapels and other attractions. If guided exploration is more your style, the Ecotourism Karpathos company offers excursions and activities, such as collecting aromatic and medicinal plants. Alternatively, Arts & Walk Karpathos organizes a variety of treks and activities for those wanting a more immersive experience.
