Wine-tasting: Rhodes is believed to be the first island in the Aegean where vines were cultivated and
wines were made. Taking advantage of the rich soil and abundant sunshine, as early as the 7th century BC, the inhabitants were the largest wine merchants in the Mediterranean. The varieties grown are the ather and muscat, which produce white wine, and the mandilaria, which produces red wine. The sparkling wines of the two major Rhodian wineries, Cair and Emery, are also noteworthy. Worth tasting are: Rhodofili (white fume), Chevalier de Rhodes (red), Zacosta and Archontiko (reds aged in oak barrels), Granrose (rosé) and sweet white Muscat. The island’s tavernas serve wine from the vineyards.

52 kilometres (32 miles) from the town,on the slopes of Mount Attaviros, the area of Emponas is famous for its wines and wine festivals. There are four wineries and a distillery. Wine is also made in Kamiros, Agios Isidoros and Siana, where they also produce the traditional drink souma. It is similar to raki and you can taste it in all the cafes and taverns. Two Wine Roads have been created on the island, with signposting.

Wineries: Kounaki, Alexandris, A. Triantafyllou, P. Piperi, Mercouris, Ktima Korkida.

Water sports-diving: Rhodes is considered a paradise for windsurfers, especially on the west coast (Ixia, Ialyssos) and at Prasonisi. For those who love diving, the seabed with its underwater caves, shipwrecks and unique habitats is of interest.

In the area of Apolakkia (see beaches) is the Rhodescape Adventure Park which organises many activities for children, including zip-lining.
